10 Thai girls arrested for prostitution in India
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- Ten Thai girls were among 18 people arrested for allegedly running brothels disguised as two spas at Banipark, the Times of India quoted Press Trust of India as reporting.

The Thais and eight men were booked at Sadar police station for breaching the Immoral Trafficking Act.

The arrests followed public complaints.

Police raided the Crystal Mall at Banipark and arrested the manager, four Thai girls and helpers at the Thai Harmony Spa.

Six Thai girls, three customers and the manager of Crystal Spa were also arrested.

The girls charge between Rs3000 (Bt1,600) to Rs 6,000 (Bt3,200) for a massage with illicit relations, police said.

Police have the Thai girls' visas and passports and are checking their backgrounds.

When I lived in India our local Rotary club has a presentation from a female rights activist.

Very interesting presentation in which she claimed India has by far the most prostitutes in the world.

I never saw prostitution or signs of prostitution overtly. All very discreet, not in your face. But I was in the conservative south. However, one expat member of our business club, a fairly young guy used to order them by the pair apparently.

Desperate times when you have to go be a ho in India.

not really.

India is quite plush these days, although there are still loads of people below poverty line.

When I first worked in Kabul back in 2003 we had a whack of Nepalese and Indian workers, all male. I thought it was unusual and I asked about it. Turns out that Nepal had a restriction on their women working outside of the country. It was put in place because too many Indians were hiring young Nepalese girls to be clerks, cashiers, waitresses and maids (sound familiar ?) and when they go to India had their passports taken and were put into brothels. Thinking back on it, during the 10+ years I spent there I never saw a single Nepalese girl working in Afghanistan, only 1 Indian girl, a couple of African girls and a whole whack of Filipino girls (plus an assortment of UK/Canadian/American/Aussie women).

Funny thing too, on the main military base at the airport in Kabul they opened a Thai restaurant and a (traditional) Thai massage parlour. Despite the numerous signs telling people that there wasn't going to be any "special" massages, or happy endings, and anyone asking for/trying to purchase "extra favours" would be charged, it happened so often they finally closed the place down. We had a Thai massage parlour open in Kandahar as well, on the Boardwalk. Same story (no happy endings and almost everyone asking for them). They got shut down though when the Medics did an inspection and found the 8 Thai women living with 6 Thai guys in a single accommodation unit that wasn't supposed to hold more than 6 people max.

Thai women have been working the business in various countries for years. There's enough "upper middle class" money in India to support "foreign talent" (obviously). Wouldn't be surprised to find they too have establishments full of Uzbeki/Russian women as well. Sheesh, in downtown Kabul the Chinese restaurants had "Special Meal Deals" where the tagline was "food included". (The locals told me that they got charged double what the foreigners had to pay for the same "special meal deal". Double pricing in reverse !)

That's a lie. My gf told me she was going to export spas to India and needed to open a show room with her fellow business partners. I'm sure there's a perfectly rational explanation. I think they got the story mixed up. [emoji23][emoji23][emoji23]

On a serious note I was told by an ex that Thais generally are not keen on Indians. Once I suggested Indian restaurant to her. She flipped. She recalled working in a major hotel in bkk. Some Indian customers wouldn't use the toilet and proceed to do a no2 on the floor and ask the maid to clean it. She had developed a bad rapport with Indians. A sentiment echoed by other Thai women I have encountered. Imagine if that was the case. Yuk.

Thais always trying to get a quick income any way possible theres a reason they have a rep the world over. India cant talk tho they have some of the biggest red light areas in the world.

Good thing they don't do a check for prostitution in any city in Thailand.

Prostitutes from Thailand massage with illicit relations all sounds a bit iffy cant be Thai as Thai girls would never do or dream of such a thing No prostitution in Thailand so must have learned all the tricks of the trade in India or from watching bad TV soaps. These Indians had better watch what they are saying or the soldier boys will be round to pay a visit in the new submarines.

They should be thrown in prison for 5 years for not having a work permit, is that not what Thailand said about the foreign models working in Thailand with out a work permit

Desperate times when you have to go be a ho in India.

Why, it's one of the superpowers these days?

If being attractive to multinationals because they have a few hundred million middle class customers makes a superpower, then sure.

In the past, Singapore seemed to be the favoured destination for Thai girls hoping to make some money for their families on a 1-2 month holiday. At one time the was a two block area in the Little India district that had about a dozen shopse, each employing up to 10 girls working illegally. The authorities looked the other way because the people in power knew that the hordes of male construction workers in the city (mostly from South Asia) need to get their muscles relaxed occasionally (hint hint). But that pragmatism evaporated about 4 years ago and all of the places were shut down over a short period of time. Most of the girls moved on to Malaysia (considered less safe and less lucrative) or the Middle East (Dubai in particular). But I did hear of a few making forays into India ... not a place that Thais (and Thai woman especially) generally have 'on their radar'. But I understand that Malaysia has been cracking down on 'Thai spas' of late, so there may be a growing shift now to India. To be honest, I do feel a little bad for these women because they come from poor (and sometimes desperately poor) backgrounds, they're not hurting anyone, they're meeting a clear 'need', and they're not taking jobs from locals.
