Corrections Department told to tighten up medical checks of detainees

BANGKOK: -- The Corrections Department has been told by the Justice Ministry to tighten up medical checks of detainees held at the prison inside the 11th Army Circle to make sure that the detainees are healthy and will not succumb to their deaths.

The instruction follows a speculation about the circumstances surrounding the deaths of two allged lese majeste offenders, Pol Maj Prakrom Warunprapa and Suriyan “Mor Yong” Sucharitpolwong, at the prison within a month.

Human rights activists have called for the closure of the prison on Nakhon Chaisri road which is in the compound of the Army Circle 11 but under the supervision of the Corrections Department.

Justice Minister Paiboon Kumchaya said today (Tuesday) that he would discuss with director-general of the Corrections Department about the opening of the prison for a visit by members of the media to clear up widespread suspicion about the deaths of the two suspects.

Mor Yong was said by the department to have died from blood infection on November 7 while Pol Maj Prakrom committed suicide.

General Paiboon said the prison in question was holding detainees charged with lese majeste and those charged with the Erawan Shrine bombing incident.

The detention of the lese majeste suspects depends on the needs of the National Police Office as the venue is convenient for the police to escort the suspects to the court or to coordinate with relevant agencies, the minister explained.

Super scary stuff here. I even deleted Elton John's old song. I don't want to die in jail.

Lucky that they cremated Prakrom before an autopsy could be carried out. That will stop rumor mongers and gossips dead in their tracks (sarcasm alert).

I was considering the 2 out of 3 suspects sudden deaths. Statistically it is no way a coincidence. Other than the most likely explanation ie silenced by superiors in the scam i can think of one other very real possible cause of death. These mega rich elite Thais live an unhealthy lifestyle. Mostly sedentary and often starting the day with some of Bolivia's finest to get them out of the eiderdown. For any activities requiring them to be on the ball mentally eg some time going over the take sheets - meth is used. Lunch is a boozy affair to take the edge of the stimulants. This drags out until evening when they break out the china white to relax and finish up with cognac to round of any edges and prepare for bedtime probably with a few benzos.

Live like that daily for decades and then go to jail suddenly. Cold turkey is a real killer. I know a guy that lived like this although lao khao and beer Singh were his liquid vices but drugs 24/7. He just did 4 yrs in jail and is now mad as a hatter. Speaking to himself, smashing stuff. Real loony tunes. Had he not been in Samui prison where his luxuries were available in limited quantities he would probably have died in the 1st week also. But, still reckon they were whacked.

**** ***** ******* ******* **** **** ***, agreed? :D

"...and will not succumb to their deaths."

If I'm not mistaken, everyone succumbs to their deaths. No one gets out of here alive.

Come to think of it, "No one gets out of here alive" should be one of the songs they teach children in primary school. Might be the only reality they experience during their school years.

Death visits us all, sooner or later. Most of us would prefer later!

Better late and never. whistling.gif

Ok. you can fool some of the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time,

all you have to do is read the social media feed back to the strange case where people die while

incarcerated and burned the next day with no ceremony of any of the relatives presents...

The chatter also goes to say that when one falls out of favors with a very, very highly placed person,

his or her life become as worthless as a dry leaf blowing in the winds... and they soon meet their

demise..... and as Trink used to say : Nuff said....

Best to do a medical check so that the interrogators know the level of violence that can be employed to extract a confession, or just inflict abuse, and not have it result in a nasty death that people might question.

Wow. Case closed.

Are these extra-judicial killings...or was just Thaksin's tactic?

Luckily the news agencies were instructed to only issue official press releases.

Wow. Case closed.

Do the safe thing and stay out of Thai jail/prison!

I used to teach at Phichit provincial prison and it was really a slum, designed for about 500 inmates it housed over 1200 males and 300 females (separated quarters but within the same prison walls). The females had 35-40 inmates in 6x6m cells including toilet. We had 2 students in the program ending up in the infirmary for over 2 weeks because that they had been in fights... they had been attacked because they where chosen over some other inmates to join the program!

So do what you can to stay out of Thai prison, it's not like prison back home...

Generally poor healthy inmates will die in prison whereas rich healthy inmates become chronically ill ;)

I have seldom seen a photo as the one in the article. What happened? The faces show distain, boredom, unhapppiness, pain, aloofness....

It would make a real character study artwork.

If that lot are in charge of the well-being of prisoners, heaven help them!

Two within a few weeks of each other in the same case, in the same prison... Hmmm....

Kind of scary stuff, if you consider what that means about the state of the country at present.

But at least, presumably, it saves on the messy inconvenience of having to put people on trial and prove what they were being accused of.
