Company Accused of Attempting to ‘Electrocute’ Villagers

Kampong Speu provincial deputy governor Vey Samnang is scratching his head over a dispute between a company that operates a cashew plantation, Ouk Khun, in his province and villagers who say it grabbed their land and then installed electricity cables to electrocute them.

Mr. Samnang, who is in charge of settling land disputes in the province, said he is doing his best to be reasonable, but is failing. A team will visit the area near village one in Phnum Sruochto district’s Treng Tayoeung commune today to investigate the dispute, he said.

Yesterday, village resident Rem Phal Chanly – who has accused the company of grabbing her land – said it also attempted to electrocute villagers.
