Attacks tipped to hit global trade; BOT watching markets

BANGKOK: BANK of Thailand Governor Veerathai Santiprabhob has described the Paris terrorist attacks as a new risk that could be repeated at anytime.

He said yesterday that all countries should remain vigilant and try to remain calm because there was uncertainty over the consequences of the attacks.

France closed its borders following the tragedy but public transport has not been affected.

At this stage no measures have been implemented by the French capital market in response to the attacks.

Veerathai said the BOT was closely monitoring local markets.

The Commerce Ministry, meanwhile, believed the attacks would not affect Thai exports to France, although they may cause difficulty in the shipment of some products as Paris will raise security on imports, while the Euro currency could be weakened.

Commerce Minister Apiradi Tantraporn said yesterday that Thai exports to France may only face slight impacts in the short term if there are stringent security import measures and a weaker Euro. The stock market would also be hit in the short term, while more investors could shift to invest more in Thai and Asian markets in the near future as there may be lower confidence in the European market.

She said that Thai exports to France account for only 0.89 per cent of total export value. If the value of European currencies is hit, Thai goods could be a little more expensive and that could affect exports in the short term.

Last year, bilateral trade with France was worth US$4.07 billion, down by 29.99 per cent. Thailand clocked a trade deficit with France of $786.34 million. In the first nine months of this year, shipments from Thailand to France were valued at $1.19 billion, down by 5 per cent, while imports increased 12 per cent to $2.02 billion.

IS can't win a world war so there has to be something else behind all of this, really if the US, Russia and several Euro nations got to gether they could clean every square inch of sand in the middle east of IS.

Didn't the coalition of the willing already try that with AL Qaeda? If you want to kill this snake you are going to have to do more than cut off its head. Which means every Muslim is on the hitlist because clearly everyone of us is on theirs.

What an incredible article. People are barely scooped up off the street, but Thai exports will be unaffected as long of course, that the French forces do a good job.

**** off. How are your exports going after you whitewashed a fatal terrorist bombing in your own backyard. I don't suppose Frances first priority was to insure their exports weren't effected when 20 innocent people were killed at erawhan

Ahhhh your talking about the spin the Americans came up with to destabilise the Middle East, well there done a dam good job because now we have a ruthless IS, imagine the $ to be made in weapon sales, the $ to be made on the spike in oil prices from the stock pile of oil already put away, share market going hay wire.....those savvy investors knowing when to buy and sell...and the little man paying the price for these money movers...

Can't wait for the usual TAT "the Paris-attacks will not harm Thai- tourism"- announcement!

Expect Minister Kobkarn to jump on this ASAP. I expect there will be an announcement by Tuesday: Thailand-Ebola and Terrorism free.

There won't be any hit on global trade from the attacks , why should there be ? So a 124 people died ....the Russian plane was 224 people and we hardly speak about it. Yes the borders are "closed" for a few days and some more police presence.

But you can bet Uranus that Gold & Silver will be hammered down again monday morning.

Doubt that would do much good - the terrorists are already in Europe as recent events show.

Lets not forget what could have happened on that train a while back. Absolute slaughter and all done by one man.

It is only good luck that the US guys had the sense/balls to take him down.
