BANGKOK: -- Illegal tour guides, drug peddlers, illegal entertainment venues and con men who prey on foreign tourists have been marked for crackdown by the police in a concerted joint effort by the National Police Office and the Ministry of Tourism and Sports to ensure safety of tourists while visiting Thailand.

Tourism and sports permanent secretary Pongpanu Sawetroon said the crackdown was launched on November 1 and concentrated on tourist destinations and venues frequented by tourists such as airports, hotels and entertainment venues.

The crackdown will continue until all the illegal activities are kept under control, he said.

Tourism Authority of Thailand has forecast 28.8 million tourists visting Thailand throughout this year generating revenue totaling 1.4 trillion baht. Thai tourists, meanwhile, are expected to spend 800 billion baht this year.

Regarding Thai tourists in Paris in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, Mr Pongpanu said the ministry had contacted the Thai embassy in Paris to look after the tourist numbering a few hundred.

Good for the economy and takes the criminals edge away. This is the only way to curb the current trend. The only way......

Another day another crackdown.

Here is an idea: if everybody was doing their jobs and enforcing rules, regulations and laws there would be no need for crackdowns.

Don't they realize that everytime they announce a crackdown they are shouting, "We don't know what we are doing!" or "We know what we are doing! How do you think we can afford al these nice cars on a civil servants salary?"

Either way, it looks bad. But they obviously don't give a rats arse.

Oh no, not another crackdown.

Oh well, no worries, all will be back to business as usual by Friday.

The crackdown will continue until all the illegal activities are kept under control, he said.

Interesting comment. He wants illegal activites under control, not stamped out completely? I suppose it is not possible to eliminate all the illegal activities controled by the police and/or military.

Dear International Tourists,

You may have heard recently that Thailand has been conducting crackdowns on government and police corruption, mafia-like organizations, con artists, drug dealers, and a wide variety of other criminals.

Please excuse our appearance as we apprehend and relocate approximately 20% of the population. You may encounter inconveniences, such as a lack of taxis at the airport, or entire city blocks closed for business.

We want to assure you there is no place safer than Thailand, unless you venture onto the roadways, or travel on our substandard buses, intercity trains and our unprofitable national airline. Therefor, we recommend you arrive wearing comfortable walking shoes. Sun block is available at the airport pharmacy shops for prices several times higher than home.

As you travel around beautiful Thailand, we hope you enjoy our river boats, National Parks, and other amazing tourist destinations. Helpful signs in English will guide you to the portion of your wallet not yet emptied by our special promotional "Farang Only!" prices.

So, what are you waiting for? Visit Thailand today!

When the tuk tuk mafia gem stone scammers are removed from the corner of Ratchdamnoen, near Khao San road, then I *might* think this is more than just another cynical marketing ploy to trick tourists into continuing to come here...

I am not sure if you understand the meaning of the word mafia. Nobody falls for those chancers and loser except foreign weak minded greedy losers!

Seems many in the USofA would disagree with that (true) statement.

Have not really had any problems aside form losing couple thousand baht and paying police for no helmet turning left on a red light . I not excited about enforced drinking laws when the alcohol limit is way to low I could gargle with listermint and be over the limit. .05 is just a way to every person that drinks any alcohol into a criminal . Used to .15 in states till madd mothers turned in having a few beers and going home into a criminal act .The alcohol level is to low!!

Been drinking and driving for 30 years no problem here.

What happened to the Bangkok Bomb Crackdown ? there were quieter about that than they are about Paris , Something to do with Tourism perhaps ?

The incidents in Paris and bombs elsewhere are acts of terrorism but a bomb in Bkk isn't !
