Death row inmate not allowed beer for last meal

JACKSON, Georgia (AP) — A death row inmate's last meal request for a six pack of beer has been denied.

The Georgia Department of Corrections said in a news release that Marcus Ray Johnson's request was denied because alcohol is a contraband item.

Instead, Johnson will receive the same meal as other inmates — baked fish, cheese grits, dry mixed beans, cole slaw, cornbread, cookies and fruit punch — before his execution. He is scheduled to die at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Johnson was convicted in the March 1994 rape and murder of Angela Sizemore, a woman he'd met in a south Georgia nightclub.

Johnson's attorneys argue he shouldn't be executed because doubts remain about his guilt. Dougherty County District Attorney Greg Edwards says there is no doubt Johnson killed Sizemore.

Stupid. A man about to be executed should be allowed a couple of beers. Hardly going to hurt him.

Stupid. A man about to be executed isn't exactly being rewarded for meritorious service to humanity. Why the heck does he deserve special privileges?? Beer, cigarettes? Really? How 'bout a few strippers and a little party??

They should make him spend his last few hours cleaning out the cell he's vacating...

With a toothbrush...

It could kill him , alcohol poisoning.

Georgia uses lethal injection. Having alcohol in the bloodstream might create complications.

And complications have been all too frequent......

Another legalised murder after, it seems, 21 years of being tortured by incarceration on death row. Yuk!

You mean, society rid of another vicious predator after 21 years of mostly self-initiated appeals. And how's burning your own kids to death for "yuk"?! 'Guess child murder victims don't count for much in your world.

Yes, I know. Nothing will bring back those kids. And that's more than sad. Nothing will bring back that executed murderer either. Not so sad...

I would agree that what he did was atrocious and deserving of severe punishment. However, in my opinion, no inhuman law maker has the right to terminate the life of anybody. Much less to torture them first. Do you really believe that no innocent people have been murdered by the American "justice" system? How naïve you must be.

To trust the state in judgement of ones wrong is bad enough and this is why we have juries in the first place to do that part - with or without mistakes they might make. To then allow the same state to kill a person already held in confinement and no longer able to harm others in the general public is just simply not necessary at all, and what about the possible mistakes part again.

The time and expense of lawyers and the fame these people get after conviction cost far more then just keeping them in the prison which is a real punishment and not a cheap ticket out. They should be working to produce goods for needy and disabled people at low cost all the time knowing this is all there is left of their life. This will also off set the cost of their cage and meals - waste not - want not.
