US envoy repeats disappointment of repatriation of two Chinese activists

BANGKOK: -- US ambassador Glyn Davies repeated the US administration’s disappointment with the Thai government’s deportation of two Chinese activists last week during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan today (Monday).

The ambassador told the media after the meeting that his government was deeply disappointed with the incident because this should not have happened as the two activists might be mistreated once they are back home in China.

The two activists were repatriated on November 20 after Chinese officials told their Thai counterpart that they were wanted for human trafficking charges in China.

Mr Davies said he also discussed with General Prawit about Chinese military activities in the South China Sea and would like Thailand to urge China to abide by its obligations not to expand military activities in the sea, including the building of artificial islands.

Deputy Prime Minister Prawit, meanwhile, admitted that he was not unaware that the two activists were given refugee status by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.

He said that he had explained about the case to UNHCR representatives in Thailand promised that, the next time there is such a case, the Thai government would check with the UN agency first.

So, maybe these two "dissidents" were actually involved in trafficking Uighurs through Thailand. Maybe the U.S. and U.N. should butt out of this, so they don't make the same mistake that they did about the deportations of the Uighurs, who were being trafficked through Thailand by ISIS.

Do some research on these individuals. Just human rights activists in China. Who said/did something to upset the government.

I think they weren't involved in anything like u mention whatsoever and we're politic critics of the system in China. They weren't smuggling anyone.

So at last, now, a decision to make. The USA voices it's disapproval of thailands-economy behaviour about these dissidents and china's behaviour in the south China Sea.

Let's see how much favour spending bazillions on trains can buy you in Thailand.

He was not unaware! So he was aware but couldn't care less.

Shocking! You mean he stole Yingluck's part in the lakorn? LOL

The ambassador said this should not have happened!

Like talking to a brick wall. A very, very thick brick wall.

Thick, but rather steel armour than brick, yet (as strong bricks are more something Chinese) LOL

Thailand, which will jail people for criticizing the police or the government would have no problem sending dissidents back to its buddy China. Thailand has no clue about human rights and this is just another in a long list of stories.

DEPORTATION
'We didn't know two men had UN status'

The Nation

Prawit defends Repatriation of Chinese dissidents, which us envoy says "should not have happened"

BANGKOK: -- THE UNITED STATES reaffirmed yesterday its "disappointment" over the repatriation of two Chinese activists to China, while Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan claimed the international community - notably the United Nations - understood the move.

Last week, Thai authorities quietly deported two Chinese activists, Dong Guangping and Jiang Yefei, who were recognised as refugees by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and were due to be settled in a third country.

Their families have not yet received official notice of their deportation.

US Ambassador Glyn Davies raised the issue during a meeting with Prawit yesterday, saying the deportation of the two activists should not have happened since they might be prosecuted and tortured in China.

The US, together with the UNHCR and other human rights defenders, strongly criticised the Thai government's decision to repatriate the two activists.

While defending the government's decision, Deputy Prime Minister Prawit said his government would from now on ask the United Nations refugee agency how to deal with foreign dissidents arrested in Thailand.

Prawit said the Immigration Bureau reported to him that the two were deported since they were wanted in Beijing in connection with human trafficking. The deputy premier, who oversees security matters, said he was not aware that the two activists had been recognised by the UN refugee agency.

"I have already notified the UNHCR that we deported them in accordance with human rights principles," Prawit told reporters and added that the UN understood Thailand's action.

"Next time, if we have a similar case, we will ask the UN before making a decision," he said.

Davies said he had also discussed with Prawit the role of China in the South China Sea. The US wants Thailand and Asean to take a leading role in dealing with China on the matter in order to have China comply with international obligations and refrain from using force to solve the problem.

The South China Sea has become a hot issue in the region in recent years as several Asean members, notably the Philippines and Vietnam, have territorial disputes with China.

US President Barack Obama demanded during last week's Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Manila and the Asean summit in Kuala Lumpur that China stop building artificial islands in the troubled sea and guarantee freedom of navigation.

On relations with Thailand, Davies said he hoped ties would continue as usual as the two countries have had military relations for more than 60 years. The regional joint exercise of Cobra Gold would continue next year on the same scale as this year, he said.

Cobra Gold is a multilateral military exercise and a good chance for countries in the region to cooperate on disaster and humanitarian missions, he said.

Relations between Thailand and the US have cooled since the military coup last year. Washington has strongly criticised the junta and its government, demanding a quick restoration of democracy and respect for human rights in the country.

Prawit told reporters that Thailand was already democratic, since the government had followed steps in the road map which would lead eventually to an election.

"I have already notified the UNHCR that we deported them in accordance with human rights principles," Prawit told reporters"

Care to explain to us just what those "human rights principles" might happen to be? I love how they think ignorance is an acceptable excuse. Hey buddy, how about learning about how the world works as long as you are "on the job"?

"... would like Thailand to urge China to abide by its obligations not to expand military activities in the sea"

It appears that the USA now views the Junta as surrogates of Chinese foreign policy by linking the Chinese military buildup of South China Sea atolls with the Junta's deportation of two Chinese dissents. This may begin a change in USA-Junta relationship from the current feigned friendship between the Junta and the USA.

I expect we'll see a surge in uncomplimentary remarks from Davies on Junta behavior in the near future. And waiting in the background is the Tier 3 listing where USA frustrations with Prayut's undemocratic regime may result in economic damage (higher tariffs) to the Prayut regime.

What gets me is the hypocrisy of the USA , what would happen to Edward Snowden if Russia sent him back.USA were demanding his arrest , mmmmmmm?...double standards always and you should keep your nose out of everyones business. Team america...

You need to do a bit more research before posting. Snowden broke some serious laws and put lives at stake. One of these guys wrote political cartoons and complained about the Chinese government's response during the big earthquake years ago. The other attended a remembrance for Tiananmen Square. Hardly comparable to Snowden.

So which is it???

ThaiPBS:

The Nation:

Meanwhile, the BKK Post offers no help on this, as their report of the same meeting makes zero mention of what Prawit says he did or didn't know on the subject.

Meanwhile, it's absolutely refreshing (and somewhat rare) to read a Thai news media account where a foreign government official (in this case from the U.S.) is being allowed by the media to put forward his own government's views and policies in his own words.

As opposed to having Thai government officials engage in their favorite habit of reporting their version of what other government's supposedly said or think about Thailand and its activities.

But, good ole' Prawit still just couldn't help himself, and had to do it anyway, as regards the U.N.

"I have already notified the UNHCR that we deported them in accordance with human rights principles," Prawit told reporters and added that the UN understood Thailand's action.

Actually, from what I've seen reported as regards the U.N.'s position, no, they didn't.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees agency said on Wednesday that the two individuals were in possession of a UN "protection letter". They were waiting to go to Canada after being accepted as refugees at the time of their arrest by Thai authorities.

"These people are recognised refugees, meaning they were interviewed and their claim of persecution was found to be legitimate," Vivian Tan, a UNHCR spokeswoman, told Reuters news agency. "They should not be sent back to a place where their lives can be put in danger."

Yes the UN understood the move. They understood it and understood it was wrong and told him so.

US is throwing stones in a glass house about this deportation to China as they are treating people that they don't "like" equally bad as China! Maybe all countries should stop extradite anyone to US too as they might face death penalty or be mistreated in places like Guantanamo.
Just look at Edward Snowden, US want him extradited from Russia and if he would be extradited he would certainly get the death penalty for treason. But what he did was showing the rest of the world how US really treat us.

What's in one mans eyes is a hero is in another mans eyes a criminal!
