Obtained temp car and mc driver's licences in Chiang Mai almost 2 years ago. They expired last year but I understand I have up to another year to renew. Problem is I am now in Pattaya. Can I renew here or would I have to go back to Chiang mai (and stay long enough to get a residence certificate) ?

Should be no problem to renew in Pattaya provided you can get a residence letter here. I recently renewed my 5 year license in Pattaya using my yellow book from Surin as my proof of address whereas the address on the expired license was from an apartment I had earlier rented here.

If the license has expired for more than a year, you might have some extra trouble.

REMARK :

1) IN CASE OF DRIVING LICENCE EXPIRED MORE THAN 1 YEAR

- TAKE A THEORY TEST

And the theory test is not a piece of cake if you are not prepared.

Three years outdated: full new tutoring, theory and practical test. A new license so to say,

Land Transport Offices are not like Immigration when it comes to "areas" of jurisdiction

I got my 5 year licence renewed the first time in Bangkok even though I lived in Pattaya

Got my second 5 year renewal in Pattaya

Have heard of a number of people who have gone to Rayong, because the lines are supposedly shorter

Well I renewed my car and m/c licences in Pattaya using my old Chiang Mai licences no problem. A much more pleasant experience than my visit to Immigration in Jomtien. The Land Transport office was packed but I was still in and out in less than an hour including the 10 minutes or so it took me to find queue 1 (machine that dispenses the queue #s). At Jomtien Immigration I used the fast-track service in front of the photocopy shop and the guy convinced me I needed separate Residence Certificates for car and m/c , to pad his fee no doubt, but now that I think about it I likely could have used the 1 and copied it. Good for another 2 years. Thanks for all replies.
