fatter than harry
...because we all have so much knowledge on this subject Been living in Phuket for more than 2 years now and am finding myself going to the same old haunts - I wanna broaden my horizons, reach for the stars, go to new bars! Can you list the bars that you rate above others and why? Hopefully we can build an area by area bar stool guide, a bit like Top Gun, only with beer instead of F15's. niagarekoja
Well that`s "That". Everybody must be keeping their watering holes to themselves.
neenthewiser
Some friends of mine reckon Captain Kirk's in Soi Easy has the best girls but I find them too pushy for lady drinks. Friends Bar, Soi Dongtan I like. I don't think there are any good bars in Kata/Karon. Other than quiet places for expats to winge over a Heineken the place is like a morgue. Anyone know a good place please post. I used to drink in a place called Toshe Bar in Soi Sunset. It was a shit bar but I'd generally be left alone and would drink a bottle of Scotch, eat a pizza, watch the football and all the comings and goings from the Expat Hotel. Ah the simple pleasures of life. But that bar's closed now so I don't know.

Always found soi easy, a bit like being in a cave. Mind you it`s better now the air con has improved.
fatter than harry
Captain Kirk's has gone down hill loads from its best days, still I think thats the rule in Soi Easy, most of the bars seem to have closed down. Seadragon is always a winner, the Lions Den is interesting. In Kata I used to enjoy watching the world go by in Sue's bar (just at the brow of the hill next to the peach hill Elvis place) Good girls, good beer, footy, and the rest, haven't been there for a while though. neenthewiser
In Kata I used to enjoy watching the world go by in Sue's bar Well... I don't like Su's bar because, on one of those days when bars have to close, Su told all her customers she would have a party at her house. We went along and were told to help ourself to beers from the fridge. I noticed one of the staff sitting next to the fridge scribbling notes. Sure enough, when we left, we were each presented with check-bins for what we'd drank. Note, we weren't charged cost price (30B per beer, which might have been acceptable), we were charged full bar price. What a bunch of c***s. Talk about Phuket Thais being moneygrabbing, spoilt by commercialism.

neenthewiser
I take it you will not be going again Indeed I haven't been back. And just to add, Su's house was a big posh place with an electric gate! When I wanted to leave I had to ask for permission.! Aahh the simple pure Thia people! Basher
I live in Rawai Phuket and don't like the bar scene very much, too much the same sh*t over and over again for me, so I very rarely go into Pratong, but if I do I drink in TJs Monkey Ba, Soi Sea Dragon, Terry is a right laugh in there and he will drink with you and is not tight with the rounds either, great place. But so saying I very rarely go 'over the hill' so I stay in and arounf Rawai, drink mainly in Freedom Bar as it has whiskey, pool and blues music, a table next to the ladies so I can oggle the birds going in and out and no BGs hassling me. Charlie the owner is a right laugh too by the way. And i live 5 minutes from it and have a back road to my place, no cops and harly anyone on the road, brill. That's just about how I like it anyway, Bash

davethailand
Just came back from phuket, 3 days spent just to see customers who visit my bar and friends. nicky handlebars good for a daytime beer and look at the bikes. another customer of mine owns kangeroo bar, blue note, fat boy saloon and the dragon disco, dragon disco is a good place, mind you i was in a bit of a state by then. great time in all of the above, girls were better than my last visit although soi easy too pushy and we got ripped off with the change, stupendous prices for a beer bar. LadyinRed
I didnt realised that Mee's has been levelled, that is sad (I was there a few mths back). What about the so-called 'diver's bar' in Kata Ctr (#3 Dan Kwian) - that was one of my fav old haunts
fatter than harry
Calm down dudes! The mass destruction of Kata was kept only to the soi opposite the kata beach hotel. Kata Centre is as it always is in the low, ahem, green season, very quiet.
sonthaya
A few of my favorites, Jazz bar just down the Soi where Irish bar is on the beach road, Toro bar at Soi Eric and Parrot bar at Soi "Katoy"

Me too. I like The Point bar near Don's Mall in Rawai. Very quiet, a few ladies (but I'm not allowed to look) and a very good pool table. Owner Ian and partner Porn - nice people. RDN
Kata Centre is as it always is in the low, ahem, green season, very quiet. What is this "Green Season" you speak of? It's a euphemism for wet, windy, get-your-wellies-on weather. "Green" as in "Blimey, haven't those weeds grown quick!". "Low" season is far too unattractive a term for the current weather - but I love it! Today at the beach in Karon, there were no people for 50 yards apart from a Thai man, woman and baby playing in the surf. No rain, but quite cloudy - perfect for lazing about and getting some good air. "High season" - you can keep it!
