So many political angles in this.

Some will say the gay Syrians are getting special rights.

But what's interesting to me in the context of fearing Jihadist terrorists, that there is assumption here is that GAY Syrian men won't be terrorists.

That's a fascinating assumption.

I wonder if it's even true though.

Yes, I can totally see it's a can of worms. Some may fake having a gay identity. I assume they're talking more about a gay identity rather than ever engaging in MSM, which of course are very different things.

And how will they check if they're gay?

Oh, a few simple questions should answer that:

Are you absolutely fabulous?

How many musicals did you see last year?

Have you ever seen The Wizard of Oz?

Are you a friend of Dorothy?

What's your favourite Barbra Streisand song?

Have you read Oscar Wilde?

Which Sex in the City character do you most identify with?

When you watch football what percentage of the time is spent staring at the footballers' shorts and what percentage watching the ball?

Are vaginas icky?

this is too serious a topic to make extraordinarily stupid and narrowminded jokes.

I am sure it is hell on earth for every gay male or female to live in a muslim-extremist controlled country.

Yes, gay identified men are indeed oppressed in the Islamic world, but my point is that there's lots of gay sex that goes on there which is NOT labeled that way ... so what is gay?

When you're dealing with non-western cultures, the answer is often, not the same thinking about it.

I have done screening for refugees. It is up to the person being screened to make their claim for being a refugee. I have screened people who I was reasonably sure were gay, but it was not something they were going to admit to or discuss, so it was not the basis for determining refugee status.

Coming from those cultures, I don't think you are going to find very many people who are going to make the claim if they are not gay. And even if they do make the claim, it generally needs to be backed up by some evidence that they are facing persecution.

Dealing with issue of homosexuality as a claim needs to be handled carefully and sensitively, but in most cases, the persecution is very real and the evidence is often ample to back it up.
