PHNOM PENH (Xinhua) – Cambodia launched a campaign on Friday to reduce the use of plastic bags and stop littering plastic waste on streets, Tourism Minister Thong Khon said.

The campaign was jointly organized by the Tourism Ministry, the Environment Ministry, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), and the Union of Youth Federations in Cambodia.

"The campaign is to encourage people to cut plastic bag use and stop littering plastic waste in order to improve the beauty of our country," Thong Khon said at an event held at Wat Botum Public Park.

During the campaign, a short video featuring "Plastic never dies" was screened. Youth groups collected plastic bags in Phnom Penh in order to raise awareness on plastic waste reduction and recycling.

In Cambodia, it is common to see people drop plastic bags on the ground immediately after use, or leave litter by the side of the road for rubbish collectors.

Hun Sen, the so called leader of Cambodia, is a despot and a thug. Anytime Cambodia launches a positive initiative, it is an amazing thing. Those poor people have suffered under his despotic rule for far too long. Never forget, he was one of the Khmer Rouge leaders.

Hun Sen came to power with the Khmer Rouge and served as a Battalion Commander in the Eastern Region of Democratic Kampuchea (the state name during the Khmer rouge government). The fact that he is premier to this day, is an incredible thing, and testament to the amount of total power he wields. Though the mighty courageous San Rainsy has tried hard to reign in this madman, it has been impossible. His power is absolute. The fact that the western nations have been complicit, by allowing him to call his country a democracy, is a complete embarrassment, and a farce.
