BANGKOK: -- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) announced today that Bang Lampoo market will be the next target where sidewalk vendors will have to leave the place under the city's plan to make the facelift of the place.

There are more than 500 sidewalk vendors in Bang Lampoo market who continued to illegally occupy sidewalks to erect makeshift stalls to trade.

It says Bang Lampoo is among several sidewalk markets on the pipeline that have to be evacuated early next year.

They include Huay Kwang market, Pak Klong market and Saphan Phra Pok-Klao market.

According to city officials, Huay Kwang market is already in process and work is already half done.

Government spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Karwkamnerd today called for understanding and cooperation from vendors on the cleanup operation under the policy of the military junta to return happiness to the people, and to beauty the places back to their origins.

Don't forget, these proposed "facelifts" include us long-term expats.

Many of us came to Thailand because we are living on a low-budget retirement income.

I came back here after 10 years away and noticed the prices of everything doubled while my income remained the same

Don't worry, I'm sure the BMA will have low-budget expat retirees who haven't been here for a decade and who didn't make adequate provision for their retirement at the top of their list of people to cater for.

One question to the Government .WHO gave the permission to allow the sidewalk markets to operate in the first place,Get rid of the lot of them In EVERY City and Town so everyone can use the footpath the way it suppose to be used instead of the road,

When will Sukhumvit Road between Soi 1 and Soi 15 be cleared. I am guessing there is too much money to be made by special payments to have it cleared as well.

Remove the roadside markets that people have been happy with for a long time, that vendors rely on to feed their families and send their kids to college.....Return happiness to the people, my Arse

i like the line "return happiness to the people" yeah right, by taking their livliehood away, that will surely make them happy

Others will be quite happy they can walk on the sidewalk. Problem with many markets is that they take more and more blocking everyone. Near my home they keep the markets in check.

Leave the sidewalk markets and vendors alone.

They are a big part of what makes Thailand what it is.

Eyesores?

You want to eliminate eysores in Thailand?

The biggest and most discusting eyesore in Thailand is the filth and garbage everywhere you look.

If you want to beautify Thailand, outlaw plastic bags!

Issue citations for littering.

Teach Thai people that it is not O.K. to unwrap something and just drop the wrapper on the ground!

Providing trash cans in public areas would be a great start..

But leave the sidewalk markets and vendors alone!

Yes, many of you, who did not plan for your future, came here to take advantage of the Thai people and the low cost of living THEY were able to maintain for a long time.

Those days are over now.

You probably did not plan for that either.

Your situation is not the fault of Thailand or Thai people.

Only you are responsible for your situation.

Options:

Go home and have your family support you,

or apply for government assistance.

Maybe in the next life, you will plan ahead?
