Rangsit-vibhavadi Rd - Bikes Allowed?

Featured Replies

On Rangsit Vibhavadi Rd, from Bangkok to Rangsit, there's the highway above, and a side-road on the left. The side-road is the one that allows you to turn off, go onto the tollway, do a U-turn, etc. The traffic on the road with the highway above goes rather fast, and whenever I end up on that road (being somewhat new to Thai roads, I sometimes end up on it as opposed to the side-road, getting caught up in the flow of traffic) I get the feeling that I'm not supposed to be there. Possibly due to the fact that I don't see other bikes there, and they're all on the side-road.

Does anyone know if bikes are allowed on there? I've never seen a sign, such as a bike pic in a red circle with a diagonal line going through it, which is what I would expect if they're not allowed. But every time I end up on there, I feel rather nervous, and given my lack of Thai, would rather not get pulled over by the police. (Bangkok-Rangsit has or rather had Don Muang, and there are police bikes on that road.)

Any info would be appreciated....

Hmm... there was always something I loved about Vipawadee-Rangsit road, and I couldn't quite put my finger on it... now I know... no motorcycles!

I actually don't know if they are allowed in the main section, but it seems that they keep to the frontage road, maybe because it's restricted on the inside... maybe somebody else can provide more info.

Yep,

There are no two wheeled vehicles allowed on the elevated highways in Bangkok I believe.

A pain if you have a 'big bike' and so of those roads would be great to tear down, but it is a blessing in a car not having little Waves/Dreams weaving around the place!

You would normally need to take a ticket to get on the tollway, I would have thought they would have refused to give one to a motorbike :o

Thanks for the responses.

Jim/James - I didn't mean the elevated tollway, but the mainroad that runs underneath it. It's a good 3 or so lane large road, and has a separate "frontage" road to the left which has another 2 lanes or so. (Even if my Wave was allowed on the tollway, I don't think I'd be brave enough to face that....)

As Teej said, bikes keep to the frontage road, and I was wondering if bikes aren't allowed on the main road (underneath the tollway).

Just wondering, as I often get sucked into the main road by the traffic, and inevitably panic when I'm on the main road, for fear I'm breaking traffic law. (I tend to abide by the laws in my home-country, and would definitely be reluctant to break them here, not knowing what to expect.)

I'm pretty sure that even 'big' bikes are not allowed in the centre bit (I don't ride a bike), never seen any prohibition signs though.

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

just drove down Vipawadee Rangsit and was trying to look for the signs that prohibit motorcycles... couldn't find any but then again it was dark and raining.... but i do think that they are prohibited on the main inner section... must be the only non-freeway road where they are prohibited, yeah?
