Thai Airways were brilliant in the 70's and 80's. Shame they missed the chance to build the long-term training scheme needed to maintain an international airline.

Here's the other problem. ICAO watches over standards in all areas of aviation, not just the airlines. It'd be a shame if the airports in Thailand were to fall foul of a similar type of degradation of standards.

THAI unaffected by US downgrade

BANGKOK: -- Thai Airways International said it is spared from negative impacts to derive from the US aviation regulator's decision.

The US Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) decided to downgrade Civil Aviation Administration of Thailand (CAAT) status from Category I to Category II. The new status means that all airlines certified by the Thai aviation authorities are unable to increase flights or operate to new destinations in the United States.

THAI President Charamporn Jotikasthira said in a statement that THAI has operated no flight to the US, after the termination of its Bangkok-Los Angeles route on October 25.

"THAI confirms its commitment to aviation safety standards, and assures all that THAI operates with the highest international aviation safety standards," he said.

The FAA's move is a blow to the Thai aviation authorities which have been criticised of lax safety standards. It was believed that its decision would encourage the authorities in other countries to impose strict rules on Thai airlines.

During the Vietnam war, Thailand got a high standard and good aviation educations.

But than they did it the THAI way. Stop keeping it this good level. Getting the old fashion way. Loooks good must be good.

I think you're confusing the Thai Civil Aviation Authority with Thai Air. It isn't a problem for Thai airlines because it doesn't fly to the USA. So it won't affect its business. Of course, if the EU comes the same conclusion as the USA, then it will be a problem for Thai Air.

I think you're confusing the Thai Civil Aviation Authority with Thai Air. It isn't a problem for Thai airlines because it doesn't fly to the USA. So it won't affect its business. Of course, if the EU comes the same conclusion as the USA, then it will be a problem for Thai Air.

Except it is a problem for Thai Airways. They can't open new routes to the USA even if they thought they could make money. They can't even change their code shares probably. But the big problem for them is that their safety certification has been signed off on by a bunch of incompetents! so they do have a problem. Their planes may not be airworthy.

They would be well advised to contemplate a strategic alliance with another carrier as a minority shareholder ( and probably leave Star Alliance.. They can never compete between SQ and ANA). Sorry, I can only compare airlines (and airports) from my experience as a passenger / customer.

I had several flights where something unexpected happened in the airport, and those Germans were not able to get anything managed while Thai Airways did it with improvisation. Minor things, like luggage etc. But it adds up, that's why I prefer Thai Airways.

Oh yeah, because the customers of Thai Airways are privy to and experts on all the ways basic safety (especially maintenance) is being ignored by the lazy people. Real good logic there.

Does anyone else, except me perhaps, remember back in the 1977 to1979 era when Thai International was partnered with the then SAS and had joint training and maintenance staff service.

They won awards international awards then and every year they were rated among the top airlines in the world, up there with such airlines as Singapore Airlines for customer satisfaction.
