WASHINGTON: -- US air force pictures from the skies over Iraq give little idea of the effectiveness of air strikes against ISIL. The planes are here because something has been spotted, or intel is bringing them here to hit something specific.

Civilian casualties and doubts about its effectiveness lead many to question its use. But on Thursday success was in the air.

“In Iraq, we recently conducted strikes against three leaders in ISIL’s financial and leadership network. Their removal will degrade ISIL’s ability to finance their efforts,” said USAF Colonel Steve Warren.

One was described as a “legacy” al-Qaeda member and head of extortion, and another an executive officer. The financial officer was the third from the top echelon to be hit in recent months.
