is Chiang Mai hotter than normal this December?

Fairly normal. Saturday morning was nippy, not yet had a more extended period of chilly mornings, a couple of years ago it was very cold for a few weeks, 11-13 each morning. Probably have a few weeks colder than this shortly.

yes I'm sure I can remember some 12° mornings even last year

I was looking at the weather history for Roi Et only yesterday. 34C (35C today).

Last year the average for Dec was 23C.

So far this Dec the average has been 32.8C and every day has broken the last 10 years highest recorded temperatures.

I was also reading an article about the strengthening El Nino effect into Asia, which forecast very late rains and temperatures of 45C in Thailand for the early part of next year. Rice crops will take a beating next year.

Faz, I think you're confusing average minimum with average maximum.

23 last year, 32.8 this year I find improbable.

This kind of question can be answered by referring to actual data, which does exist. Collecting individual impressions and opinions gets you nowhere.

And chances are you'll get those, but it's anyone's guess if those will be late December or somewhere in January. It requires a cold spell, and you don't know if/when those arrive. To have one early December would have been unusual though.

Select any previous month or year for the actual recorded temperatures

I divided the actual Dec 2014 temps by 31 = 23C.

Then check the average actual over the last 14 days of Dec this year.

The daily "actual" shows two numbers, a maximum and a minimum, adding either of those sets of numbers and dividing by 31 will not give you an average for the month, it will only give you an average maximum or minimum at best.

I dont forsee water supply problems in CM through this dry season however places like Khampaeng Phet are already trucking water in fire trucks.

Mentioned many times that we are, according to the experts, in an El Nino period and while i dont keep records midday temps seem at least 2 degress above the expected.

Thais, excluding some of the the farming community, are not renowned for water conservation so will be intesting to see how things are holding up come April 2016.

They are the actual daytime temperatures and night time temperatures.

We are only concerned with the average daytime temperatures.

As I will be coming to Chiang Mai straight after Christmas I just checked the weather forecast and see the temperatures in the north are ranging between 31 in the day and 18 at night. Is that also normal for this time of year?

That is a quote from the OP. Who is this we you are talking about?

Living in Northeast Lamphun, it's a little warmer than last year but not by much. Nice and balmy during the day and downright chilly at night. Anyone thinking that 'global warming' is manifesting itself in Northern Thailand should take a rain check. Seasonal variations in micro-climates is more like it.

Just scroll down to the graph and you can easily see an answer:

Yes, it is unusually warm for December.

Chiang Mai is a really large province, the daytime temperatures in the province at say 10am on any day in December range from probably around 12 degrees atop Doi Intahanon to 32 degrees in Muang, how does anyone get an average and an actual out of something like that! My day time temperatures in Mae Rim are consistently 27 degrees, not 32 or 33.

Going back many years - one would put away the fan in October and dust it off in February. Now you are more likely to use it year round.

The heavier quilts we used for at least 2 months a year before, haven't seen the light of day for at least 5 years.

So I would guess it is warmer.

When I first arrived in Chiang Mai there was nothing but small villages and farmland between the still being constructed superhighway and Hang Dong, Mae Jo, Bo Sang etc. and between the moat and the zoo was all low-rise. The larger urban district of concrete and tarmac must surely have an effect on the local climate. Having said that, nothing odd about December this year that I have noticed. It's a bit hot and humid today and yesterday, but the cool weather will be back tomorrow, I guess.

My sure-fire guide to temperature at this time of year is my bottle of coconut oil.Coconut oil solidifies if temp drops below 24 C, and as of today ,this year, my oil has remained liquid, whereas previous years it has solidified usually by late Nov/early Dec. This is in the same room, in the same condo.

So IMO, going on my very basic [but very reliable] method, i would say that ,YES, C/M is hotter than normal this December. wai.gif

very hot in Thailand. I am sweating every night. thank you America, you make my life shit with your pollution.

Where's the "you're a dick" button?

America has an evil Government but you can hardly blame them for Climate change .China is more at fault in that regard.
