Canada To Open Office of Embassy in Phnom Penh Early Next Week

The Canadian government will officially open the Office of the Embassy of Canada in Phnom Penh on Monday next week, said a press release from the Embassy of Canada in Bangkok.

Located within the British Embassy, the new office consists of one Canadian and two locally engaged staff, and will play a key role in further strengthening the important bilateral relationship between Cambodia and Canada, it pointed out.

“Under the leadership of Canada’s Ambassador, resident in Bangkok, the Office is responsible for all political and commercial relations with Cambodia. It will also provide consular services to Canadians, a responsibility which until now had been assumed by the Embassy of Australia,” it underlined.

According to the press release, the opening of this office is in response to the growing economic and political importance of Southeast Asia in the world, and reflects Canada’s commitment to strengthening ties with countries in this dynamic region. With the opening of this office, and a similar one in Vientiane, Canada now has resident representation in all 10 ASEAN countries. Canada has also established its first dedicated Ambassador to ASEAN and has enhanced its representation to that organization.

“Cambodia and Canada have a history of constructive ties and engagement, going back to the Paris Peace Accords” said Ambassador H.E. Philip Calvert. “Our partnership is diversified and has involved education, demining, environmental protection, research and more. Now, with the growth of Cambodia’s economy, Canadian companies and educational institutions are seeking new opportunities to enhance ties. The office in Phnom Penh will play a crucial role in supporting and expanding our partnership in all fields.”
