Process for selling used car and transferring ownership

Would someone be kind enough to outline in detail the procedures and documents required for both buyer and farang seller(if any attachment templates that would be great).

Also can the ownership of a vehicle registered in Bangkok be done in Chonburi or does it have to be done in Bangkok? How long does the process take? Does the seller have to be present or can he transfer over power attorney to transfer the ownership to a third party?

Thanks for any and all info!

I just sold my car (registered in BKK) today to a guy in Chonburi... It went 'somewhat' smoothly, but still very Thai style.

I would suggest getting a Thai person to help you through the process to make sure you don't end up with seller's remorse.

When I sold one of my trucks the buyer come over with a fat wad of 1000s and we counted out allot of them which he gave to me and I gave him the keys and the blue-book. I then signed some forms, which were in Thai, and that was the last I saw of him. Just let the buyer to all the paperwork as they're the one who's interested in getting registered as the new owner.

I recently sold a vehicle. The paperwork I provided was the following.

Copy of passport face page (signed).

Copy of passport visa page.(signed)

Copy of work permit.(signed).***

signed transfer paper.

signed power of attorney paper.

Sales receipt.

Buyer handed me the cash and away he went. He sorted out the name transfer and I also believe changed the province as well.

*** If no work permit I believe a residence cert from your local immigration office is needed.

Getting an agent to do it may well be the best idea if you have no Thai friend to help you. For example, your buyer will have to make 3 or 4 trips alone to the city of Chonburi to reregister the car. Firstly, he has to have it actually registered to Chonburi, then he has to go back about 4 days later to have his name put on the book and the car passed. Then he will have to go back a third time to have the plates changed to Chonburi plates,
