Good place for an elderly folks holiday?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I have elderly friends in UK who want to come on holiday here early next year. Both in 70’s a bit frail, but GP says OK to travel. Hubby recently had prostate surgery and wife is partially disabled. A big tourist hotel would obviously not suit.

I was wondering if there is somewhere small/nice near Chiang Mai Ram or BKK Hospital where they could easily obtain nursing/medical services if ever needed? I looked at McKean but I don’t think it would be suitable for a short holiday. Can anybody recommend a suitable alternative based on personal experience? Also, are there any tour agencies which operate sightseeing with wheelchair-accessible transport? Thanks for any suggestions.

I think your friends should reconsider and perhaps choose another country. To spend the last measure of their physical strength and hard earned moneys to visit a country that has so little to offer beyond cheap whores, food and booze that can be had elsewhere. Where they will be scammed and fleeced from the first taxi from the airport to dirty waterfalls Charging 10x local price to enter. Where they can be injured/killed on the roads with no accountibility, with bent Cops, and Hospitals that will not treat the injured until funds are deposited in advance.

Perhaps if they were from China or Japan, eager to spend on expensive Golf Courses or private Sky-Lantern shows for 10000 baht per person. If they must come by all means OK, but Thailand has made it clear they are not wanted or needed anymore.

NOT.

just saw an elderly man trip and fall down hard. he tripped on one of those notorious metallic or concrete things sticking up on a sidewalk. couldn't get up and was bleeding pretty good from his knee. a number of people came to help.

Vivo Bene Village in Doi Saket opened as a facilities offering both short and long-term care. Often people come for just a few weeks to get away from the European winters. They can arrange a guide and suitable tour van to see the sights in northern Thailand. http://en.vivobene.ch/what-we-offer/holiday-or-long-stay.html

There are people on staff trained in the care of the elderly and they have a relationship with Bangkok Hospital.

Great, travel to the other side of the world to seek a hotel next to a hospital.

He said they were elderly , not on deaths door step.

Careful what you say ..... your years are adding up also.... and before you know it......?????

Hua Hin or Cha-am; these are perfect destinations for folk who like the quiet life. So quiet in fact that one might think oneself dead already.

Unless you, or somebody with extensive Thailand experience, is acting as a chaperone/guide, tell them to forget it. They'll be ripped off by taxi and tuk tuk drivers, and shysters of every color, dragged into tailor and gem shops, and

stumbling/falling on terrible pavements.

They'd be captive in their hotel, and may as well be Iin Morocco being cleaned out, closer too.

Spain and Portugal are nice at that time.

Spot on Gonzo! Well said. Some people often mock the things they are to be.

I find so many malcontents posting here and wonder why the hell they live or visit Thailand in the first place. To them everything is wrong or bad or evil. That includes the people, the food, the government, the police, the laws, the traffic, the drivers,etc.. Nothing ever lives up to their standards or expectations. If that is the case, get the freak out of Thailand. Go home or to another place you can bitch about.

These are people who refuse to adapt or are incapable of adapting. This isn't their home. This is the Thai people's home. They manage. I happen to enjoy it here. I enjoyed living in Japan. Hell, I even enjoyed living in Southern Illinois. Yet in each of those places there were people who never stopped bitching day in and day out how bad it was. Just leave. And do let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.

I think the OP has over estimated the problem with his Friends! So he has had an op for prostrate. That being done, he should be on the mend and hopefully good for another ten years. Barring any medical issues, they should be reasonably stable on their feet and observant to watch out for everyday obstacles to make sure they stay on their feet. We run a little Resort on Koh Samui and frequently have retired couples come and stay with us. Our observation is that quite often when they arrive, they are perhaps a little stiff and unfit. But because of the warmer climate and the fact that they start getting out and about (exercise), they very quickly regain their vigor and and (within reason) zest for life. Personally I am 71. I run nearly every day with my labrador (okay he's quicker than me over the short distance) followed by some anaerobic exercise. When opportunity arises, I am off (with my lovely Wife) exploring the World where ever the fancy takes us. If anyone should have the ordasity to suggest to me that I am too old and infirm to do so...............I would be absolutely livid. They may be Senior Citizens, but would be surprised, at 70+, they are as decrepit as you are suggesting, and there are many places they are physically capable of visiting, including in Thailand, before you condemn them to a wheel chair and commode. It might be what they need to get out of the rut of sitting in the house, watching tv, day in and day out. Oh, and yes we have had one of our frequent returning customers come back for the fifth time. She has just had her second hip replacement and is loving being able to get out and about, albeit with a walking stick and not over doing it.

A beach resort is probably a better proposition. If it was my parents visiting Chiang Mai & getting taken care of by my wife & myself, fine. Independent travellers, to Chiang Mai, no, IMHO. Read the OP again.

I don't know any male foreigners living in Thailand, over 70, who aren't nearly dead (most are dead).

I only know one woman.

How long do you think you have left?

Without serious medical issues?

I my self are fighting with a lot of medical issues including prostate cancer, I also have difficult walking. I'm a few years younger but I enjoy the beach and have chosen Pattaya, you can rent at VT5, VT7 and you will see a lot of old folks in the same situation,

Pattaya have a few good hospitals I like Pattaya memorial and their services, there are also Bangkok Pattaya hospital and Pattaya international plus there is a service where the doctors come to you. The hospitals take some EU insurance and you can find that on their website. VT 5 have direct access to the beach it's 5-10 minutes walking distance and then in a very slow pace, the chair vendors are very helpful and will assist you to your chair and there are toilets convenient at the beach. You have many restaurants that serve international food in close distance and there are also restaurants in the buildings Wirth good food and they have delivery to your condo. Don't let the fact that you are older, disabled and have difficult moving around stop you from enjoying Pattaya and jomtien, there are a lot of old folks from UK and Scandinavia around the pool every day and it's also a restaurant pool side. Come to jomtien and enjoy a nice vacation. Pattaya have a lot of nice places to visit it's not only bars and bar girls.

Thank you, but I don't need to read the OP again. He suggested Chiang Mai, not me, I suggested Koh Samui, which has beaches nearly all around it. As I have said, we have hosted many Senior Citizens here without a problem, there are also a plethora of good hospitals within a short distance of most Resorts. I'm 60, and I'm realistic about (my) life expectancy in Thailand.

You might make 75 ..... but it's statistically unlikely (if you stay here).

Different if you only visit Thailand a few months a year, most of the serious problems are caught and dealt with in the home country.

(or they don't let you travel)

Life expectancy for men living in the UK ...... 79 ...... that means half of all British men die before age 79.

And you ain't living in the UK.

I'm 72. I play golf regularly, and would probably wipe any course you care to choose, with you, off the stick. And judging from the general quality of your posts, I'd say I also have a lot more brain cells to play with than you. You don't think you'll live past 60? Why am I not surprised?

This is the Chiang Mai forum. OP posted "I have elderly friends in UK who want to come on holiday here early next year. Both in 70’s a bit frail, but GP says OK to travel. Hubby recently had prostate surgery and wife is partially disabled. A big tourist hotel would obviously not suit."

No mention of Samui.

I`m knocking on a bit in years and fancy one last fling this Christmas while I still have the physical strength to handle it.

MaeJoMTB -- if you really do live in MaeJo, you should come to a meeting of the Chiang Mai Expats Club where you'll see fifty or sixty men over age 70 and a couple dozen women above that age too. You simply don't get out very much, do you?

If you mean they are nearly dead because they move a little more slowly than you, well OK, but they still have a lot of zest for life, live independently , go out with friends to social events, play bridge or golf, drive their own vehicles, have girlfriends, travel, etc, etc.

What a thoroughly depressing thread this has turned out to be

It's because a few of the "wise-guys" who had no real knowledge besides their own prejudice and fear piped in. These are some of the same misogynists who think that no western woman would ever want to retire in Thailand despite it being a wonderful place for us. Incidentally, I know at least six or seven western women over age 80 who live independent lives here and at least three dozen over age 70.

A 45 year old man visits his doctor. He asks the doctor, will I live till 80? The doctors asks, do you drink? No said the man. Do you smoke? No said the man? Do you do drugs? No said the man. Do you go with loose women? No said the man.

The doctor replies, so why do you want to live till you`re 80?
