MOSCOW: -- Russian police have raided the offices of the pro-democracy movement founded by Kremlin critic Mikhail Khodorkovsky, less than two weeks after he was accused of organising a contract killing.

Vladimir Markin, a spokesman for Russia’s Investigative committee, said the raid related to a case against against Khordorkovsky in 2003 surrounding the illegal privatisation of a firm.

Khodorkovsky, who used to controlled Yukos oil company and was once Russia’s richest man, said the raids were reminiscent of the Soviet era and were linked to comments he made against President Vladimir Putin.

“The decay had entered its final stage,“ he told the Echo Moskvy radio station, “We are all familiar with this from the time of [soviet leader Leonid] Brezhnev.”

Khodorkovsky has denied the allegations.

so Putin sees this man as a threat to his power so he has to go ?

Exactly. And the people of Russia seem to love this man and their constitution or whatever guiding document governs Russia must allow all these abuses to take place. Putin has taken Russia back to the cold war era.

The people in Russia must think that he's ok as a tough leader. In February this year he was very popular with a Rating of 86 % for him,,,,,That's not bad hey.

Russia in the 90s was a complete basket case in virtually all aspects of society. Yeltsin did little to curtail the anarchy unleashed following the collapse of the Soviet Union, and many people transformed from being relatively comfortable and middle class to being absolutely destitute in a very short space of time. Add to that the national humiliation at going from being a competing superpower to being on the receiving end of international food aid - Putin turned that all around, providing stability and dignity where all seemed lost. Of course nobody is blind to his and his cronies' thieving and murdering ways, but with the lack of a credible alternative (partly through his own doing), he is seen as the man who saved Russia and the Russians.

So why do you think he admires Donald Trump? the hair? Why are Americans gravitating towards "The Donald" There is a right wing movement going on around the world. A good example is Poland and the disaster there. People are scared and running into the right wing fold world wide thinking they will be protected but the rightwingers are just sitting there ready to shear the sheep should they step into the awaiting trap. The right wingers are shouting "we will protect you" from the rooftops. This flood of migrants is just what the doctor ordered to boost their cause. Heaven sent? Even though the Russian economy sucks Putin is still seen as Russia's "we will protect you" savior. He is a clever man and attacks his enemies before they can get a foothold in public opinion.

1) When you see numbers this high, you can be sure they are false. You can't get 86% of the people to agree on anything especially a politician. Sure, after specific events popularity can be high for a short period, but for nearly 2 years running? ...and with the economy and everything else tanking? Nope, don't buy it.

2) In Russia, when a stranger calls you on your phone and asks for your opinion of the Russian president what do you think the answer is?

Personally I don't think these former oligarchs are any more ethical than Putin. All about the money

grab and what one can get away with. Those connected made off like bandits and moved a big

chunk of cash out of the country. Those who were a little to greedy or flat footed eventually got

a smack down. Very convenient after the wealth has been made to support democracy and rights

of property and company ownership. Putin and Khodorkovsky, two peas in a pod as far as I am

concerned. Only one could win the power struggle. Oh well. blink.png

Very similar to Germany in the thirties a complete basket case and then along comes this funny little guy with a mustache and restored national pride etc and the rest is history.

Pick out minorities ripe for persecution, create a siege mentality in the minds of a military obsessed population, engender a belief in their own racial purity and uniqueness - yes, seems scarily similar in some respects.
