Four gold mining sites in the Sandan district of Kompong Thom province, where people have mined illegally for years, were shut down on Wednesday, according to the provincial deputy governor Kong Vimean.

Mr. Vimean said the sites located in Phnom Penh Ji Mountain were raided on Wednesday. He said the mines are mostly owned by people from other provinces. He added that there were eight families present during the raids, but no one was arrested.

The raid was prompted by complaints from local authorities and people about the digging activities on Phnom Penh Ji Mountain, the deputy governor said. He said authorities have asked the people many times to stop digging for gold in the mine.
