MOSCOW: -- Russian prosecutors have formally charged four Chechens in connection with the February assassination of Kremlin critic Boris Nemtsov.

Another man is in custody and will be charged in the near future.

The suspected organizer of the killing is still at large. He is Ruslan Mukhudinov, who has ties to Chechen President Ramzan Kadyrov.

Lawyers for Nemtsov’s family say prosecutors are using Mukhudinov to deflect attention from the high-ranking people who really masterminded the murder.

In October a Moscow court denied a request from Nemtsov’s daughter that Kadyrov be questioned in connection with the murder.

Kadyrov meanwhile has suggested that Nemtsov was killed
over remarks he made supporting the French magazine Charlie Hebdo, which published satirical cartoons of the prophet Mohammed.

The suspects are charged with committing murder as part of an organized group and illegally purchasing, carrying, transporting, and storing firearms.

Lawyers for at least two of the accused, Dadayev and Eskerkhanov, said they would request a trial by jury.
