The owner of a truck overloaded with bricks and cement that caused a bridge in Mondulkiri to snap in half last week has five days to come up with more than $40,000 to cover repairs before authorities send the case to court, an official said yesterday.

However, it is unlikely that Thai Phan, the owner of the overburdened vehicle responsible for partially destroying the steel river crossing, will be able to come up with the cash, according to provincial director of transportation and public works Mao Thunnearak.

“He accepted that the bridge collapse was caused by his overloaded truck, but he does not have money to pay for the repair,” Thunnearak said yesterday.
