Poipet railway to be finished in 2016

Featured Replies

A railway linking Phnom Penh with Poipet town on the Thai-Cambodian border is due to be completed by the end of 2016, local authorities announced following a visit by the minister of tourism yesterday.

With only 6 more kilometres of track to be laid, Minister Thong Khon paid a visit to the site of construction works for the new railroad in Banteay Meanchey province, which is intended to facilitate trade and tourist travel between Thailand and Cambodia According to Poipet Governor Ngor Meng Chroun, three local casinos – Golden Crown, Tropicana and Grand Diamond – as well as the local immigration office will be obliged to relocate parts of their establishments to make way for the impending rail.

“This is not something those companies or the immigration officers should negotiate or refuse, because they have known that their buildings were located close to or on the railroad territory,” he said.

ThaiVisa, c'est aussi en français

ThaiVisa, it's also in French

It would be fantastic to be able to hop on a train in Bangkok and go to Phnom Penh. No mini buses! LOL

Great news!

This has been funded by Australia and the Asian development bank. They would like to link Vietnam through to Singapore......

Meanwhile LoS makes bold statements that Japan and China are going to come sweeping through with Hi-speed links......

Also the following is a statement in WiKi about Thai trains...

"The SRT has long been popularly perceived by the public as inefficient and resistant to change. Trains are usually late, and most of its equipment is old and poorly maintained. The worst financially performing state enterprise, the SRT consistently operates at a loss despite being endowed with large amounts of property and receiving large government budgets; it reported a preliminary loss of 7.58 billion baht in 2010.[Recurring government attempts at restructuring and/or privatization throughout the 2000s have always been strongly opposed by the union and have not made any progress."

So don't hold your breath waiting for the big gap to be filled down to the Malay border.

"None of the casinos could be reached for comment yesterday."

Any side bets on the casinos moving?whistling.gif

Great news for me,living only 100 Klm from Poi pet and I love Phnom Penh. They have a good car park at the border and not too expensive.

Do you recall off hand how much the parking is? I'll be crossing at Poipet soon and trying to decide whether to drive or get a taxi there.

(Where do you live? I'm a little under 150 kms from Poipet right on Hwy 33.)

The last time I parked at the border, it was for one week and about two years ago. I can't remember how much it was exactly. I think it was about 100 baht a day. I do remember thinking that it wasn't expensive. I used one of the boys that hang around there touting for business, and he arranged the parking, the visa and a taxi. I normally like to arrange things for myself but this time was an exception and well worth it.

I live in a small town called Sanam Chai Khet in the province of Chachoengsou. It's probably a bit over 100 klm.
