Vietnamese man pleads guilty in NYC to terrorism charges

NEW YORK (AP) — Just weeks before trial in New York, a Vietnamese man has pleaded guilty to terrorism charges, agreeing not to challenge any prison sentence between 30 and 50 years.

Minh Quang Pham pleaded guilty Friday in Manhattan federal court. The charges were providing material support to a terror group, conspiracy and a weapons offense.

Judge Allison Nathan set sentencing for April 14. Pham faces a minimum of 30 years and a maximum of life.

Prosecutors say Pham went from the United Kingdom to Yemen in 2010 to pledge allegiance to al-Qaida in the Arabia Peninsula. They say he later assisted an American who edited an English-language publication for al-Qaida.

They say a U.S.-born al-Qaida leader directed him to detonate explosives at London's Heathrow Airport, but he didn't carry out the plot.

Lots I don't understand. Like how he got from not setting off a bomb in London's Heathrow

airport to NYC. But hey 30 years to life works for me. thumbsup.gif

Mr. Pham is in his early 30s, born in Vietnam, lived in Britain since childhood, converted to Islam and is a practicing Muslim, his lawyer, Bobbi C. Sternheim, has said in court papers.
