How Pattaya Adapts to Changes by Pattaya Kids

pattaya.jpg

If there is one thing that Pattaya is very good at it adapting and reinventing itself. It is always something that makes me smile when I hear the old timers saying it is “a lot quieter now than it was 20 years ago” which is quite frankly rubbish.

You don’t have to me a genius to work out that Pattaya clearly has a lot more people here now than 20 years ago when you look at how the city has grown.

What they actually mean is “the cheap shack where I used to drink in isn’t as busy as it was 20 years ago” – probably not because there are now bars that are infinitely better!

From my experience you tend to find that the people who complain are the ones who have maybe been here too long or came when the Thai Baht was significant weaker than it is today. This usually means that they have to reduce their beer intake to 10 bottles a day rather than the previous 12 and reducing his number of bar fines as he now has the addition cost of Viagra to take into account. The hardship that these guys are now facing makes you realize how much they must be suffering!

It is quite funny listening to these people’s prediction for the future of Pattaya. “It’ll be a ghost town in 2 years” saying this 3 years ago, “they are going to close all the bars and ban gogo bars” – hard to believe when new ones are opening all the time. Let’s face it Pattaya is changing but will bars close and gogo bars get banned?

Well, I might be an old timer (14+ years), and I don not drink 10 bottles of piss a day, but I can tell you Pattaya is in a stage of change and not for the better.....not by a long stretch.....over built, over hyped, over the hill....even the ladies are over it for the most part.....but I am adaptable and will survive with Plan B always in my hip pocket.....my best advice?? Always have an out, no matter where you call home....???

What a strange post!

I've been in the area for a long time and have never heard anybody say Pattaya is quieter than it was 20 years ago. Actually, I ALWAYS heard the opposite, so when this post starts off with what I see as an absurd statement, I have to wonder if the writer has even clue about the topic they've chosen to talk about. This person lost all credibility with me at that point, so I could continue reading with curiosity -- not with a sense of getting any valid information or hearing a worthy opinion. Unsurprisingly, the little I read after trying to get past the opening statement didn't surprise me....it's drivel.

If you take the NY long weekend Sukhumvit traffic as a guide (compared to the previous 5 years) , yes, central Pattaya would seem to be on the decline - the Thai's are all heading towards the beaches and attractions Sattahip way in droves...... leaving the traffic chaos and the stench of the drains to the Chinese and Russians.

Mind you, they still have to get pass the construction of the underpass on the klang first), it was a 60-70min journey from Boonthavon to the Ambassador Hotel for most of the NY long weekend

Of more concern to the future of Pattaya as a viable holiday destination is the supply of staff who want to keep their clothes on and work the high season.

I have heard many accounts of restaurants and cafes ranging from 5 star to road side diners having insufficient staff (and no leadership) to cope with the volume of customers and waiting times which are often + 1 hour for meals to be served.

Who ever said that Pattaya will be a ghost town in 2 years must never have tried to find a parking space in the Central Festival garage on a weekend afternoon.

And the bars closing down? Yes, that is sure to happen as soon as Issan becomes a bustling center of commerce with a multitude of opportunity for the youth of the area. But in the meantime...

Certainly we can't.

I had to pinch myself a few times on a night out in Soi 7 and 8 on a recent visit over the high' season to remind myself where I was as it was so quiet as opposed to in the (not too distant) past when both Sois were thronged with a constant stream of humanity, moving from bar to bar, fighting against the occasional Baht Bus and providing great consternation to moto taxis.

That said, this year LK Metro and Soi Buakhao and sub sois were quite busy in comparison, even jumping, like Pattaya of yesteryear, on some nights. This however could be down to a shift in preferences. I had one crap night in 7 and 8 and didn't leave the LK/Buakhao area for the rest of my stay there.

I agree with the OP in some points.

As long as I can recall, people have been predicting the 'end' of Pattaya as we know it; usually they predict the 'decline' will come about as tourists from other regions such as North East Asia, Russia, India 'take over' from the more 'traditional' Pattaya tourists from Western Europe or North America. However this 'traditional' sector remains possibly the largest tourist demographic in Pattaya to this day.

Much of this was merely wishful thinking from the faux rotarian types who were always yearning for Pattaya to attract 'quality tourists' so they could carry on playing out their fantasies of being 'upstanding citizens'.

The bottom line is that Pattaya = Sex = $$$ and lots of it. I don't think people will tinker with that too much. I first visited Pattaya in 1988 and last visited a month or so ago. Not much has changed in those 27 or so years apart from the size of the place and that Pattaya continues to expand Eastwards.....

Every now and again, I'll come across a little corner of Pattaya which hasn't changed too much since what I would class as my 'Golden Times' there. Still, it's nice to sit and remember those times and people which will never return, washed away on the unstoppable tide of time.

I've got to admit that I wasn't thinking of the bar and nightlife scene. I haven't done that in ages. I was thinking of the amount of traffic and people around during the day. It seems the flow of traffic in and out of Pattaya is much more than it was 10 years ago. Where I live south of Pattaya, I rarely had to wait to turn into my building, but now it's always a long wait to make the right turn. I don't take the car into town to go to Friendship on the weekend as the amount of traffic makes it an amazingly slow and tedious trip. Instead, I use the bike. I was thinking of commerce and (daytime) activity in general.

Yes traffic is off the scale.

Lot of buses contribute a lot to this, also more Thais from Bangkok coming down at weekends and mid

week breaks, plus loads more local Ex Pip's around town , who cant drive..wai2.gif

Yes, LK and Buakhao are what's left of the Pattaya I moved into. Relative newcomers, but the spirit still lingers. Once they erect yet another soulless mall where Excite used to be, it'll be the death blow. Pattaya is turning into a run of the mill, utterly boring, used up tourist trap.

I agree, just a bashing thread of the old Pattaya crowd, basically the people who were visiting Pattaya perhaps 20 years ago.

Perhaps someone is selling condos!!!!
