Where to get WIndows 8.1 reinstalled in Bangkok?

Sorry for such a boring topic.

A friend's wifi driver doesn't work on Win 10, but will on 8.1, so he needs a reliable (and hopefully cheap) shop to install it. The machine is an Asus x205t. I've tried installing the latest Broadcom Win 10 wifi driver from the Asus site, and also let Win 10 do an upgrade on its own from the Device Manager. No dice. He has spotty connectivity now from what must be an earlier Broadcom driver, but it locks him out for long intervals, hence then need to downgrade to Win 8.1.

We live in Banglampoo (Khao San area), but can of course travel.

Thanks in advance.

Not saying not to downgrade to Windows 8.1

...but why not just swap out the WiFi module on the Laptop, or use a separate USB WiFi stick, and keep Windows 10?

Happy Land Market, Bang Kapi. There are a bunch of computer repair places I think on the third floor...I am pretty sure they could install just about anything he needs and maybe even a new WIFI module.

Trying reloading just the Win 8.1 Wifi driver for the X205T. I see they have the Win 10 and Win 8.1 Wifi drivers on their driver website for the model.

If after loading the Win 8.1 driver it works again, but Win 10 still tries to load a later driver, then just click the driver Rollback button to rollback to the Win 8.1 driver and Win 10 shouldn't try to reload a later driver.

As a last ditch effort, before reformatting, go into Device Manager\Network Adapters and delete/uninstall the WiFi device. Hard shutdown your device, restart and let W10 get the correct driver as it should recognize the hardware. (instead of trying to update the current installed drivers). Some machines have had issues with certain drivers during upgrade but i haven't seen any for Asus X205TA with reference to WiFi. If you haven't already tried, you could try downloading the 8.1 drivers from ASUS and try those if the above method fails.

This will obviously work if you can connect using a dongle to access the net as i believe you don't have a CAT5 connection on this netbook?

Before giving your computer to a 3rd party to install W8.1, make sure that you backup all your personal stuff; some shops will do this automatically, but a lot won't. The other problem will be to reinstall any additional software that has been installed since purchase, without you supplying the registration codes of said software, if the software is replaced it will be pirate unless a charge is made for new installs.

Reformatting is easy, replacing installed software can be difficult.

Definitely worth a try.

An 802.11AC USB wifi dongle might be the easiest solution. That's what I'm using on my Lenovo IdeaPad whose built-in wifi isn't great.

^^^ I had a lot of trouble like this after upgrading to Win 10 and the final solution was a USB adapter. It's like a small button plugged in there and it works great. It installed itself after I plugged it in. I did have to disable the onboard to avoid confusion by the laptop.

Another thing. I have one computer that messes up if I don't disable the NIC I'm not using. No idea why. I have to keep the Ethernet NIC disabled to use WIFI and vice versa. I will find it hunting for ethernet when there's a wifi signal available and vice versa if I don't do it manually. It's been so long since I've used Ethernet that it doesn't matter.

Cheers.

Best place to get in re-installed would have to be PRO CORNER or itunlimit.com at Fortune Tower. Talk to Khun Nick who is fluent in English. there is a map on their website, just click on the "CONTACT" button on the top of the page and a map will appear with the exact location of his outlet (which is called PRO CORNER, not itunlimit) on the 3rd floor.

You should find several posts about this Co here on the Forum too, just search for it. I was once referred to this Co by another TV member and can now thoroughly recommend it myself. This is one of the few places where they will not rip you off, in some cases you will be charged even less than what was estimated when it turned out the problem was smaller than expected. In addition, Khun Nick employs challenged folks (their English is limited though), which I applaud. Please let us know about your experience in case you use this Co

Many thanks to all. My friend is a newb, and a cheap newb at that, so he doesn't want to spring for an external adaptor, and I tried an Alfa wifi adaptor of mine on his machine and his didn't recognize it, though my windows 8.1 does, as did windows 10, and my Linux boot. I tried update on the driver and windows sucked down something different, after which no connection points showed at all (same as the Asus latest). I also tried the 8.1 driver on the Asus site to no avail. Didn't try just glowing away the Broadcom driver and letting Windows choose one on boot, since if it chooses a bad one there's no fallback. It's not my machine, thank God, and even Linux is struggle with it (crashes on suspend, no audio driver for the driver chip yet). Cute little thing though. Light as a feather and 500GB, $200 and strong enough to run Win 10.

Cheap but OK with no Internet ?...you get what you pay for....if nothing, you get nothing.

Did you even answer my question? It's an easy enough job...but you actually have to reply...

In addition, there has been no feedback to lopburi3's suggestion of simply rolling back. http://www.thewindowsclub.com/rollback-from-windows-10

What are you thinking?

It doesn't sound like a driver issue, but something else. If your friend is so cheap he won't buy a 50 baht USB dongle, then there's really no hope for him.
