BANGKOK: -- The government will report progress of its effort to eradicate illegal fishing tomorrow before representatives of the EU travel to Thailand to follow up on the matter.

One progress to the illegal, unreported and unregulated or IUU fishing is that several legislations have been passed to expedite illegal fishing cases.

Government spokesman Maj Gen Sansern Kaewkamnerd said Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan had informed the cabinet meeting yesterday the progress of the government’s efforts to tackle illegal fishing in the country, The NNT reported.

Gen Prawit informed that law enforcement, registration of fishing vessels and installation of tracking devices had progressed significantly, the spokesman said.

He said the Cabinet then agreed to instruct relevant units to report the results of their anti-illegal fishing work to Thai and foreign media at Government House tomorrow.

They will report the progress in terms of prosecution and listen to opinions of the relevant parties.

The Cabinet also approved ministerial regulations of the Ministry of Labor to prohibit people aged under 18 from working in primary seafood processing plants and a draft legislation on trials of human trafficking cases.

I hope they've done a good job of their presentation report..............the lack of prosecutions may be the down side.

I still hope that get bans or sanctions will not be applied, albeit probably deserved......but where else can the EU source their product in the volumes that are Thai supplied.....and I guess, how much closer would the EU want Thailand to be in bed with China?

Wait and see what developements happen at tomorrows forum.

Tomorrow, yes sure, all of us having had any experience with Thai labour and delivery know what mprugni means...

Whoever the 'people in charge' might be, the 'logic' (or the absence of it), sadly, always remains the same...

Thai, Thainess, pride, face, nationalism, denial, rejection, accusations will come forward whenever the EU would, as it should, penalise Thailand, as a lot of words were spoken, but where have the real, true, 'actions' been? Nowhere, when you ask me, easy to understand as 'the guys' behind the illegal(!) fishing methods are the same 'guys' behind illegal(!) fishing boats, and the same 'guys' behind the, illegal(!) use of slave labour, and those 'guys' are much, much, too 'high in the foodchain' for some officials, or generals, to even point a finger at (providing of course they have not been simply bought off...)!

T.i.T., unfortunately. It's the whole of 'the system' which needs to be 'changed', ...but who has the will, and the power, to even think about starting to do that? IMO, only 'the people', but all the people, all together, saying no, shouting enough, and ..., how is that called again? Can't come on the word, I know it has a monument in Bangkok, and it's not 'democracy''s... Not in a lifetime then, as long as 'the masses' are kept 'dis-educated', they're safe...

Another article which fails to mention the huge amount of slave labour used in the industry. I hope the EU has the balls to do what's right, but I doubt they do. Too much money involved.
