I have a UK appartment that brings in 4800 per annum (there is a mortgage on the properry but I dont think that is taken into account). The minimum income for wife and two young stepkids would be 26600. Would that mean then that if I secured a job there of 21800 this would be sufficient to satisfy the financial requirements? (21800 + 4800 = 26600)

The actual requirement is £24,800 - £18,600 for your wife and a further £6,200 for the two children.

Rental income can be used providing the apartment isn't your main residence, either now or when you return, rental can be combined with salary providing the property was owned for a specified period in the 12 months before the application.

The rules surround employment are quite complex, there are a number of variables, like how long have you been in employment and the like.

Have you read the actual guidance, it gives a number of examples.

Yet again your advice has been invaluable. Many thanks

I have trawled through the requirements (what fiendish mind thought them up?) and I have a further question that I cant find the answer to. Perhaps you know. If I have a regular job (salaried or non-salaried) and on my days off I, from time to time, undertake work for another company, can this second income also be used in the financial requirement if it is all above board with payslip and declared to HMRC?

I have a big decision to make, UK or Australia (have dual UK/NZ citizenship). For many reasons hope I can return to UK but I must be sure I can meet requirements beforehand or I could come unstuck in a big way.

Once again thank you so much for the help you have given to myself and others.

The truth is I cant give you a definitive answer, the guidance just mentions employment, salaried or not, I don't know if you can combine various employment incomes, but I can see no earthly reason why not, then again...........
