Winnipeg man who killed British man in Peru fears trial
By Jill Coubrough, CBC News

"[His] family is trying really hard to convict me," Joshua Stevens said of Unais Gomes

WINNIPEG: -- A Winnipeg man who admits to killing a British man in self-defence at a retreat in Peru says he's scared to leave his home and is concerned about a possible trial.

"I'm very depressed. I'm paranoid to go out in public … I've read a lot of negative comments about me" Joshua Stevens said Thursday.

"People are calling me a cold-blooded murderer."

Stevens, 29, was taken into Peruvian police custody in December 2015 for stabbing a British tourist to death, who allegedly attacked him after drinking ayahuasca, a hallucinogenic plant brew.

The pair were at Phoenix Ayahuasca retreat — branded as a "safe place to experience plant medicines." Stevens said the British man, 26-year-old Unais Gomes became violent after drinking a double dose of ayahuasca and a mixing it with pure cacao, which he says enhances the high.

Urrrhhh...,killing someone is unlawful, if he fears a trial so much he should have considered that first. Yellow whingy chicken !

May be in Peru he gets a trail by the native Booga Booga trail. (old joke look it up).or may be he has fear of getting Booga Booga after he is in jail.5555

Didn't display much fear when seeking to get high...

Obviously over there getting high was not a crime, and the Brit became violent.. there were witnesses and they let him go the first time. So it seems it was self defense. Now the family of the Brit are trying to get him convicted.. maybe he fears they bribe some people to get it done. Who knows.. I would fear a trial too.. even if your right it can always go wrong.

How can it be self defense? He'd already taken the knife from him, he could of threw the knife and all 3 could of over powered him to sub due him but he chose to stab him, a murder has been committed

Its not that simple if you got a crazed person going at you who is a lot stronger its not that easy. Throwing the knife where exactly ? obviously the 3 of them could not handle it otherwise stabbing would not have been needed and the police already interviewed the people involved and concluded no prosecution needed. Who are we to say there is without knowing all the facts.

When you take a walk on the dark and wild-side...you invite the forces of evil to take control...You are not a "cold-blooded" killer...you are actually a "warm-blooded" killer who is a victim of his own stupid decisions...unintended consequences at play here...at least you can fear for your life...your friend's fears are over...

So next time I'm out having a drink and someone wants a problem with me, someone who is a lot bigger than me and looks like he's crazy and on drugs I'll stab him, you think that's ok ?
