BANGKOK: -- A manhunt was launched by Chon Buri police for a group of motorcyclists who tried to escape from a police road block and shot dead one police volunteer.

The incident took place on Nong Pungpui rural road in Tambon Thung Sookla, Si Racha district of Chon buri at about 5 am.

The victim, identified as Chamnong Thongsiri, a police volunteer, was helping a police unit manning a roadblock police in Tambon Thung Sookla when two motorcycles with four men riding on the pillions.

Upon seeing the roadblock, the motorcyclists turned back their vehicles and tried to escape prompting Chamnong to grab a police motorcycle and to give chase.

After a brief motorcycle chase, one of the two pillion riders whipped out a 9mm pistol and fired four shots at Chamnong. Two shots hit the motorbike he was riding, another shot hit his leg and the fourth hit his head, killing him at the scene.

Later on Pol Maj-Gen Amphon Buarupporn, Chon Buri provincial police commander, travelled to Laem Chabang police station to hold an emergency meeting to track down the perpetrators.

A separate team of police was assigned to extract footages from surveillance cameras installed at the crime scene and suspected escape routes in an attempt to try to identify the perpetrators and where they were heading after the shooting incident.

Meanwhile, 30,000 baht in compensation was presented to the victim’s family by Chon Buri police chief and police from Nong Kham and Chon Buri.

These checkpoints are cropping up everywhere. They're only designed to extract money from those passing by. One of my builders tells me of the harassment he gets almost every day while driving to his work site a few hours away.

A volunteer, but still....

Despite the corruption, protectionism with regards to childish 'face', the awarding of rewards for what should be all in a day's work, the paid promotions, tea money, lack of professionalism or proper training, they're not all bad.

One really has to have sympathy for an honest Thai cop who must buy his own equipment on an insulting salary. 30K for the life of a policemen just goes to show it's not just foreigners who can feel aggrieved at Thailand's ways. If he was a good one, RIP.

Let's hope those criminal killer thugs face appropriate karma, because justice in Thailand could never be enough.

$850 for a life as compensation is just pathetic. Regardless of being a volunteer or not it is still murder. Those who have commented about him looking for tea money should be ashamed. You don't know this officer and being a keyboard warrior doesn't make you right. He has left behind a family and you choose to smear him and his family in his death. No wonder Thais are getting tired of foreign people living here.

As well they should if someone isn't following the law. I was stopped two weeks ago. All of my documents were in order and I was wearing a helmet so I was allowed to continue on.

Probably because they are breaking all rules like having people in the back of trucks.. loads not secured.. ect. Builders are notorious for breaking all those rules because otherwise they can't transport all they want in the way they want. So they have to bribe the cops.. if they followed the rules they would not have any problems (but your building project would cost more)

Poor guy just trying to do a job and gets killed. They could have been a bit more generous with compensation considering the amount of "bonuses" handed out for not catching the Erawan bombers. RIP you didnt deserve this

Condolences to his family

Agreed. But it's all about money. Collect the "fine" and let them to go commit the same offense tomorrow. And collect more money.

If these were properly logged, the next infraction might result in a higher fine. Or perhaps a suspended license. Then, perhaps, a stay in jail. Sadly, there's no money in this for the police. And we've had numerous problems here with these volunteers. And numerous problems with them being impersonated. People are rightfully afraid of these check points.

I would not consider it his job to grab a police bike and give chase.

His role is to man the roadblock and assist the police by following their instructions. I doubt these include chases.

Of course I am sorry for him and I do hope the killer and his accomplices get caught.

Sh)t happens when u wanna volunteer in law enforcement and start chasing bad guys....

Idiot comment of the day goes to you.

Idiot. Rational. Same same when talking to over-emotional people who can't deal with the nothingness of our existence.

This being said, I have seen too many male Thais acting as they are Action Jackson without thinking a single second about the dangers...

I don't think it was a Thai....

Hit the target 4 times in 4 shots...

Well, Thais do pretty well in international marksmanship competition. And Thai hitmen are notoriously efficient. If you ever run across one you might not want to share this particular prejudice with him.

Thailand has more gun deaths than most countries in the world per head of population and will continue to do so as long as successive governments do nothing to curb the macho culture propagated by the domestic entertainment industry and the media - and, of course, the ease with which guns can be acquired.

I had three Thai stepsons at vocational training college and grew a lot of grey hairs over the years before they graduated, worrying they would fall victim to some testosterone-fueled teenage gunman in the endless, mindless turf war between rival institutions.

Thailand urgently needs gun laws of the kind Obama is trying to implement in the US, plus far stricter enforcement than happens today. Police who regularly stop youngsters for not wearing crash helmets and other relatively trivial offences should automatically search them and their bikes for weapons. The same goes for car, bus and lorry drivers hauled over for routine checks. It is a given that many carry guns and other weapons for "defence", leading to numerous road rage deaths and injuries.

We should always bear in mind that when one person dies, the loss inevitably impacts the lives of many more people - family, friends and work colleagues - emotionally as well as financially. I cannot imagine how my wife and I would ever have coped if one of our boys had been robbed of his life so early and our hearts go out to the parents and relatives of this latest victim of gun violence.

The pro-gun lobby would have us believe that guns don't kill, people do. This latest incident shows how specious this argument really is. Without a gun in his hand the young murderer would not have had the ability to take the life of another young man and, in the process, destroy his own future.

Why are volunteers required anyway? There are way too many BIB as it is. They just won't get off their duffs to do their job unless there is tea money involved or unless their are forced by the military to do a specific task.

I see this every day. A cop is operating the traffic light manually, messing up the intersection, while one of the volunteers in front of a school is standing helpless amid the chaos.

Any country that has conscription into the armed forces, where it trains young people in marksmanship and taking of life, is left with adults who retain these skills and attitudes after they leave and integrate back into society.

Why would anyone be a volunteer for this type of 'job'???? Face palm.

.

5am, high speed chase, being shot at, ...........zero salary. Come on people. THINK.
