PHUKET: -- The Phuket City Mayor called on Mathayom students to embrace vocational education in preparation for life after graduation following the release of research indicating a surplus of university graduates and a shortage of vocational workers.

Addressing students at the ‘Learn for Life 2016’ event held at Saphan Hin’s 4,000-seat indoor gymnasium yesterday, Phuket City Mayor Somjai Suwansupana pointed out that the majority of graduates with bachelor’s degrees in Phuket are unemployed.

“Dhurakij Pundit University’s Quality Leaning Foundation research into the top ten careers in Phuket shows most employers require 49.3 per cent of vocational graduates and only 15 per cent of those with a university degree,” Phuket Education Council Chief Buntoon Thongtan said, backing Ms Somjai.

Wow..

The beginning of the end...

7 years ago I stopped to get gas in Surin. At the gas station was a restaurant and I ordered egg and rice.

The young boys asked if I wanted it spicy in PERFECT ENGISH.

Stunned, I asked where did he learn to speak such good english? He said a U.K. university.

Now here is this kid. Speaking perfect english. His parents must have spent millions of baht for his education, room and board, cooking pet-ca-pow. I asked why was he cooking and not working? He replied, his parents were broke and he could not get a job here in Thailand.

This is a very sad day where a country can not support their educated. Even if the number 1 ranked Thai university is ranked 200+ globally.

In most developed countries, a vocational school provides you with the necessary education to get a job in a 'skilled' trade, e.g. carpentry, mason, plumber, electrician, mechanic, glazier, etc. In many instances, an individual's entry into a 'skilled' trade is through a union apprenticeship program that usually last for four years and ends with the individual being licensed in their respective trade. No such concept exists in the developing world. Go to any construction site and you will see migrant laborers performing skilled and unskilled labor and making exactly the same daily rate of pay. So, please tell me, where's the draw in getting a vocational education? Civil service is the biggest dumping ground for Thailand's diploma mills. Thailand must do something to make jobs in skilled trades attractive for Thais and not migrant labor.

It's not uncommon to have to pay to get a job here.

Maybe the parents spent all their money on his education, and had no money left to buy him a good position and salary.

Do you have any proven examples of people paying to get a job here?

Applicants may have to finance a health check. But pay for a job. Hearsay.

Not hearsay. And it's not just for jobs. Also for entrance to schools, etc.

For Phuket, I would think a lot of it is not what you know, but who you know. Eg. what family you are from here.

I do not have a proven example for Phuket, but have direct knowledge of two cases in Bangkok. Both were in the financial services industry, but were not banks.

One guy paid money to gain consideration over other applicants, and the other guy actually paid money to gain a promotion.

For obvious reasons, I will not name the company.

This leads me to believe the practice is quite wide spread, especially as corruption is part of Thai culture.

Not hearsay. And it's not just for jobs. Also for entrance to schools, etc.

Is this because the school is popular, and only has a certain amount of positions?

Probably due to both!

Do you have any proof?

Easy to repeat urban myths. Evidently impossible to provide proof.

I know of academics that have paid others to do work for them and present it as their own. But not to gain employment.

To gain professional qualifications candidates have to pay governing bodies. Not the same as paying for employment.

I do know a Thai lady who went for a job in a a large hotel on Phuket. It was one of the multinationals. Once again, I will not name it.

She was asked for a "bond" yet the job did not involve any cash handling.

When I asked her more about it, we both came to the conclusion the "bond" was a payment made to get the job.

How much was the bond?

I can not remember for sure. She is still on Phuket, I will ask her next time I see her. From memory, it was something like 50,000 baht.

When I asked her to explain it to me, because I thought it must have been payment for an on the job training course or similar, she basically told me it was so she could have the job and expressed her disappointed.

For the record, it was not a scam and sob story, put to me to hand over 50,000 baht.

She went on to get a job in a big hotel, although not as big as the hotel that asked for the "bond" and is still there today.

I have no doubt the HR manager at the big hotel is running a nice earner on the side when hiring staff.

The term used was "bond" but in reality, it appears he was asking for a "bribe."

Don't rational people take, almost everything they read online, hear second hand or see for themselves with a pinch of salt?

I saw a very famous Thai performer, perform in Phuket on new years eve. In my view it was a mimed performance. My Thai buddies thought it was amazing. I've seen live performances and they are amazing. For me, this one was sh"". I felt cheated.

Perhaps you should do some research. Ask questions of some Thai people about it. Listen to what they have to say. Don't just right it off as "hearsay" because it's on the net.
