Now I know why all you Brits are living in Thailand and trying to buy land and build houses. I just read in today's paper that the housing costs in the UK are so inflated that the world's most expensive house just sold for US$128,000,000 to an Indian steel tycoon based in London. It broke the record for a house sold in Hong Kong for US$97,000,000. Mind you, these are expansive mansions, but it must be really hard for the average working class person to even contemplate a down payment on a modest home. It is nearly the same in the US. My mom has paid off her mortgage but she's getting on in years and is struggling to just keep the taxes paid. That's the thanks they give her for all those years of work.
