Anyone using a wifi-boosting antenna for 3G or now even 4G 'superwifi'?

Featured Replies

I'm quite a technology pansy, but wanted to understand about this:

On another thread I was hearing about superwifi hotspots with amazing speeds, something around 500Mbs, currently only at places like big malls, cineplexes etc in Bkk, and that AIS is running a promotion as the best person rolling out access.

In the thread someone mentioned using a powerful wifi booster antenna and being able to pick up wifi at extraordinary distances, with brands like for example Engenius. I found it a bit hard to get my head around, but it opened up the subject of getting fast internet access at home either for free, or for the very small rates of network wifi packages.

Something that also came up is that the 4G wifi (being even called '5G' apparently) is known as 802.11ac standard (standard wifi was something like 802.11z). It seems that an older laptop might not be capable of picking up wifi on its menu which is in the new superwifi format, but that there is a card which can enable that.

A heavy net user might be able to invest in a new laptop with savings made if this is all a goer anyway.

I would be interested in this from the 3G perspective too, as I'm sure some of the folks baan nohg would too.

I was looking at antennas and things like that with 802.11ac on them yesterday at Panthip. I see in my vicinity someone has a wifi signal entitled Engenius...etc, with a big fat signal.

Let's keep the boffin standard high on this one please, let's wait for someone who knows the full sp to clue us all up. And humour of equal standard if at all. Thanks in advance.

Thanks, Les,

Not surprised if there are misconceptions on my part, sorry if ass-backwards, and no need to set me right if I'm that off the mark. It came up as a suggestion for someone wanting to use a free powerful public-place wifi in Bkk for downloading movies, the answer seeming to be the AIS superwifi hotspots. There was a bit about antennas too which I thought was interesting. I live very near a SW hotspot.
