BANGKOK: -- January isn’t just for making resolutions – it’s also the time to score some pretty sweet flight discounts too.

Thanks to the low price of fuel and stiff competition for market share, some of the world’s major airlines are engaging in what some might grandiosely term Fare Wars but what are actually just flash sales to attract customers in this traditionally lean period of the year.

Carriers like Singapore Airlines, Qatar Airways and Etihad are all flaunting some great discounts flying from Bangkok to locations all over the world – although notably concentrated in Western Europe.

As far as traveling from BKK to Oz, I can't find any other carrier that beat Jetstar for price, flexibility

and ease of booking a flight and getting there on a direct flight,

I use to fly AirAsia but with a long stopover in KL, rendering it just another long and unnecessary

tedious flight, and as long as TG will hold on to their ridiculously high fare now that the fuel component

are at their lowest, I will continue to fly with Jetstar... and I hope that the new foreigner head honcho in

Thai in charge on revitalizing the TG read this....

I've flown with several airlines from UK to SE Asia, they all transit through their hub, very few do direct flights, but those that do are too expensive. Australia is considered to be in the region, so it's easier to find budget airlines providing routes whereas Europe, and even the Middle East is long haul.

hmmm, funny, I have found Jetstar uncompetitive when you evaluate the 'add-ons' that a normal flight includes

The trick with Air Asia to avoid a long layover in Kuala Lumpur is to book 2 separate flights. It's also a lot cheaper.

For example:-

January 29

Bangkok to Gold Coast

One Booking

7 hour layover in Kuala Lumpur and a price of B26,300

Two Bookings

Bangkok to Kualu Lumpur, arriving 6:10 pm and a price of B1,490

Kuala Lumpur to Gold Coast, departing 9:40 pm and a price of B13,644

Total layover time of 3 ½ hours and total price B15,134

MAS have some good return fares now to Australia after Chinese New Year. 19,100 baht total, with a 90 minute transit in KL, 30kg baggage and meals included so competitive for a non-budget airline.

I mainly fly Jetstar but this time they worked out more expensive probably because they are heavily booked and some flights not direct (via Singapore) so I will take a two hour longer trip in exchange for a slightly better seat pitch and departure and arrival times that are more convenient for me. I don't need to arrive in Australia at 6.30AM only to sit in traffic on the freeway from the airport.

Etihad are ok as an airline but Abu Dhabi is such a crap airport if you have to go through there. Whats more its $25 US for a Jack Daniels and Coke. Over the top! As for Thai to aussie I am flying to Pert in a couple of weeks and picked up a return flight for 19000 baht. No changes are allowed as it is a promotion. Thats ok for a return flight Bangkok to Perth and being direct. All budget airlines maybe save a few thousand baht but looking at 12 hours+ each way. Thai is direct and just over 6 hours. Worth the extra I think. Just looked at Jetstar and for my dates of travel its 17470 baht without baggage or food and entertainment. Plus the flight are 9 hours 45 minutes going there and 9 hours and 25 minutes coming back. That is the price for the shortest layover. So add baggage and food and entertainment then would be basically the same but 50% longer flight times. Stick that where the sun doesnt shine.

Has anyone tried Etihad airways? They are currently advertising UK to Bkk £425 return on their website.

I have just done my 4th flight of the year 8 or 9 more to go..

i usually fly long haul as a cattle class ticket

i would fly Etihad on all of my flights if i could, best planes,

food, service, etc but i'm bending over to maybe boycotting

them on ethical reasons, a pity, their double decker planes

are the best and the hard working staff just put in 110%

but the politics are not good.

If by direct you mean non-stop then I don't see that on their website. I'm looking for a flight to Paris (return) and it's a change of plane in Taipei.

No, as you've found out, Eva only fly direct to Amsterdam or London, for Paris you have to backtrack to Taipei.

What a friend of mine has done a couple of times is to fly to Amsterdam, walk downstairs in Schiphol and catch the Thalys train to Paris, in his case it's worked out cheaper and quicker.

Air France if you are looking for a direct flight to Paris. They look like they have a promotion Book from 20 January - 09 February 2016; Travel from 20 January - 30 June 2016.

I agree with the op, prices for business class are seriously cheap right now...the combination of a strong dollar and cheap cheap oil makes flying for Americans very affordable. Fares from on first-line European and Asian carriers on Bangkok to Europe for 75-100k and to North America for 100-125 haven't been seen in years.
