Two vans intercepted with 13 illegal Cambodian migrants in Sa Kaew

BANGKOK: -- Two van drivers were arrested by troops of the Burapha Task Force at a checkpoint in Wattana Nakhon district of Sa Kaew province on Saturday as they tried to smuggle 13 illegal Cambodian migrants into the country.

The two vans were stopped by troops manning the checkpoint set up at Ban Nong Krug to look for illegal items and Cambodians who may be smuggled across the border. The troops searched the two vehicles and found altogether 13 Cambodians who did not have any proper border passes.

The two drivers and the illegal Cambodian migrants were later detained for further questioning.

An informed security source said that smuggling of Cambodian labour from the Cambodian border town of Poipet into Thailand through Sa Kaew province has become a lucrative and booming business of the human trafficking gangs involving Thai and Cambodian nationals.

The human trafficking racket works in this way. Firstly, the Cambodian brokers will recruit Cambodians wishing to come to Thailand to work charging each of them 500 baht and have them sent to van terminal.

At the van terminal, each Cambodian will be charged 1,500-2.,000 baht and issued with border passes of the other Cambodians, put in vans for travel to Bangkok or elsewhere.

Quick slide of hand with a large brown envelope, some smoke and mirrors and hey presto, migrant/under paid/overworked stooges and potential scapegoats for serious crimes committed by high income earning crime bosses or their children.

What a waste of time, for all , my brother in-law has 6 Cambodians working with him all legal every year they come for the harvesting of mung , sugar etc and not always the same fellas, so it can be done legally, and is not that expensive,

....Good God....like nobody knew all this time.......

I think their cover was blown when they saw fishing tackle in their luggage. wai2.gif

Like the drug trade a few token busts and business as usual.

So who issued the boarding passes?

Traveling in vans is a good disguise as Cambodians normally travel by pick-up truck.

wouldn't 13 normally fit into one van?
