METV or Visa exemption advice please

Featured Replies

Hoping I can get some good advice here as I plan my travels to SE Asia

I have a flight into Bangkok March 24th and then leaving again on June 26th

On March 26th I'm flying to Cambodia for a tour and then returning to Bangkok 4 weeks later _ so around end April.

So I have a 2 months then before departing - I plan on travelling south probably for a few weeks but then not sure where I will be heading but possibly/probably Indonesia or Laos/Vietnam area.

That means probably a total of 3 entries into Thailand.

An METV sounds like it would cover it perfectly but I dont have bank statements with £5k for 6 months - only 1 or 2 months - And as I am leaving my employment to travel I can't do a letter of employment -

So that option seems a non-starter - would you agree ?

So it looks like Visa Exemption is the only way to go. My thinkin gis this is the way it woudl work

- My first entry for on March 24th and then leaving 2 days later.

- Then re-entry 4 weeks later coming back form Cambodia on a flight - presumably I would get given another 30 day exemption.

- If I plan on travelling for longer than 30 days in Thailand before going elsewhere I would need to get an extension,

- if I go off to Indonesia or Laos then when I re-enter Thailand on way back for my exit flight back to London on June 26th then I would get another 30 day exemption.

Is there any restrictions on the number of Visa Exemptions you can get in a given time period - Im probably looking at 3

When granting the exemptions Ive heard they need exit flights within the 30 day period - is that correct ?

Thanks in advance for any help you can give

The restrictions on visa exempt entries are for people considered visa runners, or illegal workers, which you are not. You would have the profile of a tourist and should have no problem with 3 visa exempt entries.

Thai immigration do not usually ask for details of onward flights, although that could be changing based on some recent reports. It's the airline that will want an onward flight dated within 30 days and could refuse you boarding without one.

If you want to reduce the number of visa exempt entries you could travel here with a tourist visa that gives 60 dos on entry. When you go to Cambodia you could buy a re-entry permit for 1,000 baht. On re-entry you'll be granted the remainder of your original 60 day stay. So if you were out of the country 28 days you would be granted the remaining 30 days. That 60 day entry can be extended by 30 days.

I agree with the above about considering reentry permits if traveling out by air through Don Muang or Suvarnabhumi. If exiting in other ways, getting the reentry permit is the kind of hassle I want to avoid when on holiday.

thanks for you replies on this - one further question if I may as I want ot be as sure as possible

Understand the re-entry permit ....

If I decide not to go down that route but rather get a second 30 day exempt when I return from Cambodia then could you comment on whta I think I will do below

March 23rd - entry Bangkok - 30 day exempt given

March 25th - leave Bangkok for Cambodia

April 16th - re-enter Bangkok form Cambodia - 30 day exempt given - however as I have no departure flights other than June 22nd sounds like it might be worth buying a cheap flight on Air Asia departing before May 16th just to show immigration OR the airline from Cambodia ....

However before that date (say on May 10th) extend my exempt for another 30 days up till June 10th

Then at some point between May 10 and June 10 I will be going to Indonesia.

Then when I then return from Indonesia to Thailand as long as its after May 22nd I'll be granted another 30 day exempt as I have a final flight exit ticket for June 22nd

Does that sound like a plan that would work ?
