Rong Klua border market ordered to stop selling counterfeit goods in two months



BANGKOK: -- Thailand will make one of the country's largest border markets, Talad Rong Klua, free of counterfeit goods within two months.

This was an agreement reached at a meeting of several relevant government agencies at Sakaeo to address the problem of large scale sales of counterfeit goods at this famous border market, following last week’s riot by Cambodian traders and workers angry at the raid and seizure of counterfeit goods from one of their countrymen at the border by officials from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI).

At the meeting chaired by Sakaeo governor, recommendation for the setting up of a ‘Sakaeo Model’, which authorities hope will be able to tackle the problem both in the short-term and in the long-run, was proposed.

Under the guidelines of the ‘Sakaeo Model’, the Sakaeo police will handle short-term monitoring with continuous patrols to put direct pressure on merchants at the popular market to stop selling counterfeit goods.

A deadline of two months was agreed to put in force for the complete eradication of counterfeit goods at the market.

The deadline is expected to be met by March – May of this year before another official evaluation of the effort is made.

Meanwhile the meeting which imvolved more than 30 relevant government and private agencies also agreed on long-term plans on the problem.

This will involve the difficult task of converting the practices of Cambodian nationals who cross over the border to sell these counterfeit goods at the Talad Rong Klua market.

To achieve the task, efforts will be made to convince them to turn to selling legitimate and authentic goods.

Thai authorities are in the process of coordinating with their counterparts in Cambodia to reeducate merchants so that long-term cross border trade at the market will not be undermined as many other merchants here deal in authentic goods and are prospering.

On the riot incident at the market last week, the meeting was informed of the ongoing legal procedures for the cases following the DSI’s raid last week.

The cases are progressing in accordance with official guidelines and thus far three suspects have been arrested while warrants have been issued for the arrest of another two recently identified suspects.

Authorities are also waiting for 6 other warrants to be issued for suspects charged with resisting arrest, causing damage to public property and causing injury or harm to state officials.

No, the truly difficult task will be converting the practices of the Thai nationals.

Sounds to me like the size of the brown envelopes just got larger.

The activity will move.

I thought the main reason the market is famous is because of the fake goodies. No fake stuff, then business will sharply fall. Cambodia doesn't care about fake stuff, they encourage it as they do gambling, so why does Thailand need to get heavy with the Cambodians yet again? Will the government get heavy with the main source of fake stuff, China?

How can this or any other any company justify the ridiculously priced products they sell simply because of the name. Come on $44.500 dollars for a women's bag. If anybody is a counterfeiter it's these company's charging astronomical prices for something that costs about a few hundred dollars to produce.

So Thai agencies - all 30 of them according to the report - condone the selling of fake goods. Carry on as before for two months, and then we'll come and look at the situation again. Of course, nothing will have changed and we start all over again. Forces move in, riots, 30 agencies discuss it, etc etc etc.

I imagine that countries who respect and protect copyright laws are taking note that government officials are allowing the sale of fakes to continue.

Sure, they will start selling original goods. At $81,000, they will sell alot.

I'm on about how you can buy a fake item that was probably produced by the same manufacturers in China for a few thousand baht but it's perfectly ok for a company to sell a product for $40000 just simply because of the brand name. What kind of technology or engineering goes into a freaking purse to try and justify such a ridiculous price. Zilc,zero,nada.

So with Marshall Law or is it Article 44 now they cant even shut a few counterfiet sellers down. Not so hot on law enforcement as one would seam. Even the Tiger temple got there own way. What a joke. So who is really in charge? Not the government thats for sure.

The reason for the high prices are because of the name. Some people want to pay that for the name and there's no reason why they shouldn't. If you don't want to pay that amount then you don't have to.

If the same bag is produced in China, possibly by the same manufacturer and its much cheaper then that's fine as well. The problem with fake branding is that the name is being used illegally. And why do you think they put that name on it? It's because they can get more money for it. That the same thing you're complaining about except they haven't paid money to establish that name to generate the extra price.

It's not that complicated really.

So, move the market to the Cambodian side.
