New charter bans persons with election fraud history from candidacy

BANGKOK, 12 February 2016 (NNT) – The new constitution draft now permanently prohibits persons with the record of election fraud from becoming house members, according to CDC.

The Constitution Drafting Commission member Supachai Yawaprapat has said in a televised broadcast revealing a new requirement for house of representative candidates to be free from any records of election fraud.

The new requirement comes from a public survey, showing a desire against having house members with a history of corruption.

The new constitution also requires persons with imprisonment history to serve their sentence for at least 10 years prior to candidacy, while the permanent ban of persons with election fraud records has been developed from the previous regulation which only resulted in 5 years ban on election rights.

You can see whatever political party gains power in the next election,

will quickly try to amend these kind of laws,they are good for Thailand,

but not good for politicians.and they only think of themselves.

Woah, finally something sound and logical for a change. Now, enforcement on that will be the next point that needs to prove itself.

One does wonder whether there will be a mechanism in place that insulates political laws from amendments by parliament.....

That's start to clearing the muck from the B/S pile, what about criminal history and dear members I point the finger at the right honorable member who is let out of prison on house sitting days in the previous PTP administration , makes a mockery of the due process of Government, it should read also a criminal history................................

What is meant by "record of election fraud"?

Does this mean an actual court conviction, or the result of some less rigorous process?

I would look very carefully at Charter provisions for banning or restricting politicians. There could be ample opportunity for abuse of power.

Does this apply to persons who go into a temple for a while to avoid jail.

is becoming "PM" without having a single vote casted for you considered "election fraud"?

Good for the country nobody gets banned for staging a coup.

And I am sure it will be applied with equal vigor regardless of political leanings. hmmm perhaps should include clause about barring any military officer from continued military career if they take part in a coup? Oh, but coup isn't political, right?

The current guy is self-appointed.

But after the next election, there will be another manufactured "crisis", and then he'll be appointed by the constitutional court.

Not good. Laws in Thailand are never applied fairly or consistently. Whoever is in power gets another tool to beat their opponents.

Trivial offences compared to leading a coup.

A constitution that, if promulgated, will punish people for PAST behavior even if previous punishment had been meted out in accordance with the then constitution and laws.

So much for reform of justice, national reconciliation and any New Beginning.
