5 men killed when their car plunges into Swedish canal

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Swedish police say five people have been killed when their car plunged more than 25 meters (82 feet) from a highway bridge into a canal in the capital of Stockholm.

Police spokeswoman Eva Nilsson said Saturday that divers have recovered the bodies of five men, born between 1983 and 1996. None have been identified.

The cause of the accident on the E4 highway in Stockholm's Sodertalje district was not known.

Swedish media said it's believed the car smashed into a road barrier and then plunged into the water. At the time of the pre-dawn accident, the bridge over the Sodertalje canal was closing after it had been opened to let a vessel sail through. Its warning lamps were flashing and two barriers were blocking the road.

The chances of five people dying together and none of their identities being established sounds like the dead were not Swedish citizens, surely there would be some Id if they were?

How can they be so precise about the ages "born between 1983 and 1996" and not know the identities. Do they mean "not yet publicly identified"?

Odds are probably migrants/immigrants as previous poster stated.

Repair costs totalling the annual tax receipts of say, 25, ethnic Swedes will just about cover it.

Or the deceased appeared to be young adults between the ages of 20 and 33. They might have been 25-27 year olds who depending upon facial hair, decomposition, injury and bone structure could have passed for older or younger.

How can you even go there that based on absolutely nothing...could be 5 guys out for a night of drinking or on their way to work... Sometimes it seems that the basic IQ on this forum is so low it even makes me look good....

It is almost certain that what the report means by "None have been identified" is "None have been publicly identified." That is their names have not yet been released to the press.

This is standard procedure in most countries; names not released publicly until the victims' families have been informed.

How would you like to find out that your son, daughter, brother, sister, father or mother had died in an accident from a media report before being told in person?

Even if it turns out that these victims are not Swedes, why does it matter?

That some members, from the first reply onwards, want to turn the death of five young men into yet another TVF rant against migrants speaks volumes about those members; none of it pleasant.

There we are, many Countries in Europe have identity cards, though the Swedish one is not compulsory. The U.K. Is a bit of an exception in not having them but does explain the delay in identifying the deceased. If the next of kin are yet to be informed the press states exactly that.

They are Brits. All identified now on their facebook page. They were a band + their manager from Warrington.

FYI, the crash victims have names and in the interest of a bit of humanity, they are drummer Jack Dakin, frontman Kris Leonard, bassist Tomas Lowe, guitarist River Reeves, manager Craig Tarry, RIP. The victims ranged in age from 20 to 35.

RIP Viola Beach.

Their music was like the Artic Monkeys and this was their first tour outside the U.K. They had great potential and will be missed. Tragic.
