CCCIF expects Thai fishing problems resolved in three to six years

BANGKOK, 15 February 2016 (NNT) – The Command Center for Combating Illegal Fishing (CCCIF) speculates Thailand's illegal fishing problems to be completely resolved in three to six years.

As part of the government's ongoing measures against illegal employments in fishing industry, fishermen and fishery businesspersons will be informed of the new Fisheries Act and be obliged to perform accordingly, said CCCIF spokesman Vice Adm. Jumpol Lumpiganon.

He said the center has complied with suggestions from the European Union with respect to the enactment of the new law which has produced positive outcomes.

He said the authorities are now in the process of legislating other rules in addition to the Fisheries Act and are communicating with the general public through the issuance of fishery manuals, which help handle fishing industry in clear-cut and non-contradictory fashion.

The center forecasts that it will take six to three years from now to upgrade Thailand’s fishing industry on par with international standards, regarding the use of electronic devices to monitor fishing boats, the CCCIF spokesman said.

The CCCIF is now promoting the management of marine resources, installation of vessel tracking equipment, tracking system for volumes of catches, improvement of fishing-related operations at piers, elimination of labor and documentation problems and cooperation in fishing industry with neighboring countries.

Three to six years= never.

Six years !

Can we have an extension please ?

No actually you guys are wrong...The illegal fishing industry will be sorted in that time probably...But not because of the CCCIF efforts but because by that time there will be no fish left to catch...!! Problem sorted .

Actually there statement is a disgrace as previously they said it would be sorted this year and now in a flash have given themselves a 5 year extension....Will be interesting to see what the powers that be have to say about this timetable suggested...

Sorry duplicate post

Sad attitude to a problem that will only get worse. Fish stocks are being depleted by over fishing by a lot of countries.....not just Thailand.

IMO, I think finally they're being realistic in predicting a long term cure for this industry.

To believe that short term fixes can be successful in Thailand has proven folly at best....

Burn the boats problem sorted.

3/6 years to have fishing vessels comply to tracking equipment on board, and log books, what a joke.

How about no compliance no selling your catch? or radio fisheries 24 hours before coming into port? boat owners full compliance or no leaving port, and loss of license.

No way will it be done as quickly as that.

In 3-6yrs all reports of Human Trafficking, slavery, under-size nets, unlicenced boats, scupulous captains, corrupt fishing officials etc,etc will have

been superceeded by a new wave of damning reports of some action or other that this country has been practising for years...& in 3-6 yrs Thailand will have a big enuf carpet for all the fishing issues to be swept under.

(Unless the EU & other Western markets pull that carpet right from under them!)

Fix illegal Fishing and New Government Elections same year.

3 to 6 years? That's fantastic news. I bet the slaves have already started counting the days.... or at least etching them in to the walls of their floating prisons.
