why are second hand cars SO expensive in thailand?

I keep thinking about getting a cheap car over here, but then I realise they dont exist. It seems like 300,000 baht is the minimum for a basic model, even going second hand.

Compare that to the UK, I'm browing through the auto-trader website now and can see some sexy classic cars available: 1980s MG for 150,000. Toyota MR2 for 100,000, BMW 5 series for 200,000. Or just a basic cheap 4 door for sub 50,000.

How can the prices be so different? What happens to all the old cars over here?

It seems like it would be cheaper to import, even with all the retarded taxes the imports office slaps on.
