PM delivers speech on Asia-Pacific security at ASEAN-US Summit

BANGKOK, 16 February 2016 (NNT) - Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha has promised future cooperation with Vietnam in all areas, during the ASEAN-US Summit in California.

Gen Prayut has met with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung to discuss bilateral cooperation. Both leaders have agreed to expand their cooperation to other areas and countries in ASEAN.

Their efforts to establish stronger regional ties is meant to increase the group’s negotiating power against other major economies. Thailand and Vietnam will also promote mutual investments under this agreement and increase the value of farm goods.

The Prime Minister also revealed at the summit that Thailand is still having difficulty in proving the nationality of migrant workers in the fishing industry. He said that even though Thailand already has an effective system in dealing with the arrivals of alien workers, he urged their countries of origin to enforce stricter requirements for overseas employment on their citizens.

In today’s meeting, Gen Prayut is scheduled to deliver a speech titled ‘Protecting Peace, Prosperity and Security in the Asia-Pacific,’ before traveling back to Thailand this afternoon from Los Angeles International Airport. He is expected to arrive in Thailand on February 18.

We are sure his iron fist, and protection from prosecution approached rocked the house. Hope he sings before he leaves

I can't wait to read a full translation of this internationally-awaited speech - his wit and wisdom will surely be an inspiration to all the "lesser" nations attending..................

he urged their countries of origin to enforce stricter requirements for overseas employment on their citizens.

How does a country enforce stricter requirements for overseas (remember that Prayut considers Myanmar as "overseas" so he means "foreign") employment when it has no authority over another country's sovereignty? It should be the sponsoring country where employment is offered to assure worker and employer compliance with its laws and regulations.

So Prayut's statement sounds like Thailand disavows responsibility for foreign worker abuses in Thailand. It's the worker's home country that would be at fault.

"Gen Prayut has met with his Vietnamese counterpart Nguyen Tan Dung to discuss bilateral cooperation. Both leaders have agreed to expand their cooperation to other areas and countries in ASEAN."....

What cooperation are you talking about? Have agreed? Who is saying what to you for you having to agree? <deleted> is going on? WHO IS TELLING YOU TO DO WHAT WITH WHOM?

The welcome he received at the ASEAN-US Summit and the invitation to speak are a de facto recognition of him as PM.

Like it or not.

The Shinawatra clan took another hit.

I wonder how many people will attend this important speech - will it be even less than the few people who bothered showing up for his speech in the UN?

<deleted>?

Every ASEAN leader is there no matter what the political situation. He is the current leader of the govt. What are they supposed to do? Invite Yingluck? Even though they would probably prefer to, they are not about to stir things up, when the whole conference is about unity & cooperation in the region.

Stupid comment.

And he delivered it in perfect English. So proud of the man.

What utter twaddle - they are all invited to speak. Nobody has ever denied diplomatically that he is the head of the junta that runs the country, it's rather the path he took to usurp that role and the implications of that which are treated with disdain. That hasn't changed at all.

It may be time to get over your Shin obsession. Even if they never graced government house again he would still be regarded as (to quote offshore media) an illegitimate twerp.

Are you sure about that???

He was educated in Thailand.

Couple Posts above it shows he's mixing "Overseas" and "foreign" so even his proofreader(s) shows aren't fully conversant in the English language ASEAN adopted as its business language.

Was English used in all the ASEAN proceeding at the California meeting??? Only one fully conversant in English was Prime Minister Chun Leekpai's translator. Even Bill Clinton commented on his control of the English language when PM Chun was having a meeting with Clinton.
