Zika alert: Taiwan warns pregnant women NOT to travel to Thailand

zika_1.jpg

Taiwan has warned pregnant women to avoid traveling to Thailand due to fears over the Zika virus.

The Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) issued the second-highest travel advisory yesterday, warning pregnant women to postpone travel to Thailand, and advising other travelers to avoid mosquito bites by taking measures such as wearing light-colored clothing, wearing long sleeves and long pants, and using mosquito repellent.

Taiwan also said travelers returning from Thailand should use condoms for at least a month to prevent transmission of the virus.

An alternative theory is that birth defects are caused by exposure, consumption of pesticides. Not the Zika virus.

In the United States, microcephaly affects between two and 12 babies for every 10,000 live births. (The Guardian) 25,000 cases in the USA every year. Unrelated to the virus.

Food for thought.

There's no way there can be 25,000 cases per year in the US based on those figures.

There are around 4 million births per year in the US according to google.

4 million / 10,000 * infection rate = between 800 cases at 2 per 10,000 births and 4000 cases at 10 per 10,000 births per year

To have 25,000 cases per year at the above mentioned rate would require there to be :

125 Million live births / 10000 * 2 = 25000 per year at 2 per 10,000

25 Million live births per year / 10000 * 10 = 25000 total at 10 per 10,000

So the figures are way off but that's irrelevant, this microcephaly issue is just the tip of the iceberg.

The real and alarming issue is Guillain–Barré syndrome, once the link is proven (and it is about to be proven) nobody will go to countries with mosquitos carrying Zika. The risk is too high, it hasn't been hyped by the media yet but it will be.

Why ?

I'll leave this link here : http://www.independent.co.uk/life-style/health-and-families/health-news/zika-virus-scientists-on-the-verge-of-linking-disease-to-paralysing-guillain-barre-syndrome-a6880761.html

"It is terrible. It's a mosquito. Only one bite and 15, 20 days later you are going to be in intensive care. These people have families."

"The World Health Organisation warns if the link with Zika is confirmed, the human and social consequences will be staggering."
