Only a few of our members use walkers. We have members ranging in age from 8yrs old up to 70, male and female, Thai, British, French, Swiss, Italian, American, Canadian, Norwegian, etc., etc. There is no cost to join, no cost to play. We also have chairs available for those who just want to come and watch. Someone will explain the rules to you so that you can follow the action. (Note: 8yrs old is a little young. 12yrs would be a preferable starting age.)

We welcome complete beginners looking to learn to play, and experienced fencers here on vacation who want some competition, and if needed, we'll teach you how to fence... for free. Unlike tennis or golf, fencing is a quick sport to learn to play. You can be fencing comfortably against another player after just a few hours of instruction. Of course, you will not be ready for the Olympics at that point... However, members of the club do compete regularly in major International competitions, and win...

We have equipment that you can use. If you do want your own, we buy directly from the manufacturer in China, so the cost is less than $150 for a complete setup. We don't sell it ourselves. We are just there to fence and socialize.

The Chiang Mai Fencing Club has its own 'Fencing Salle' (club room) located just past Wat Ched Yot along the Superhighway. We meet two-three times a week so people can play when they want to. The Salle sports two electric 'pistes,' the strip/court that we fence on.

If you will send me a private message with your e-mail address, I'll send you a detailed map to the club, and all the details. Although it's just off the Superhighway, the entrance to the building is very difficult to find due to construction going on in front of it, blocking the view. The club is located inside the courtyard of a building, so can't be seen from the street. There is plenty of parking available.

Hope to see you there soon.

I've just received the notice that at the end of May, the "16th Annual Royal Thai Navy Open Fencing Championships" will be held, and open to the public.

The Royal Thai Navy sponsors this major International tournament each year, and it's open to all.

Last year at the 'Navy Open,' there were 420 competitors from 14 different countries, including two current Olympic fencers. The Bahrain National team brought 14 fencers, Hong Kong sent 9, there were 8 from Malaysia, China's national team sent another 7, but only three from Chiang Mai...

The Chiang Mai Fencing Club had just three members competing in last years tournament. We brought home four medals.

No other single club carried away as many. We are looking to do the same... or better this May. We'd love to train some new fencers so that the club's reputation can continue to grow.

Start fencing now. In three months you will certainly be able to hold up your end of a match. You might not win, but you won't make a fool of yourself either. It's an easy sport to learn to play. It just takes a while to gain experience and strategy.
