Aung San Suu Kyi, military chief meet for power transition

YANGON, Feb. 18 (Xinhua) -- Leader of Myanmar's opposition National League for Democracy (NLD) Aung San Suu Kyi met with Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services Min Aung Hlaing on Wednesday for the third time on rule of law and continued undertakings for lasting peace.

Present at the meeting at the military headquarters in Nay Pyi Taw were Lt. Gen Ye Aung from the military, and NLD senior members U Zaw Myint Maung and Tin Myo Win.

Suu Kyi and Min Aung Hlaing met on Jan. 25 for the second dialogue.

Myanmar military chief, NLD leader begin third meeting



YANGON: -- A third meeting between military chief Senior General Min Aung Hlaing and National League for Democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi to hammer out the terms of Myanmar’s political transition has begun in Naypyidaw Wednesday this afternoon, The Myanmar Times reported.

The meeting was held at the Naypyidaw Region Command military headquarters in Pobbathiri township. Suu Kyi was accompanied in the talks by Zaw Myint Maung, a senior NLD member who has been widely tipped as the next Mandalay Region chief minister, and Tin Myo Win, her personal physician and a rumoured candidate for the presidency.

Journalists were not granted access to the meeting.

A key talking point was likely to be the apparent deadlock over the presidency. The last round of negotiations on Jan 25 seemed to have made no breakthrough on the issue of the constitutional provision that bars the NLD leader from the presidency.

Parliament has set a deadline of March 17 for the two chambers and the military-appointed bloc to nominate their candidates.

Other power-sharing issues still under discussion are also reported to include ministerial positions for the military in an NLD government of “national reconciliation”, as well as the posts of chief minister in Kachin, Shan and Rakhine states.

Over the weekend, local newspaper The Voice also reported that Senior General Min Aung Hlaing told a meeting of senior military officials that he would remain in charge of the military for the next five years, despite hitting the mandatory retirement age of 60 this year.
