Immigration does not transfer visas. They can only transfer permit to stay and entry stamps.

You can just leave the country and show both passports on departure. The officer will transfer the entry/permit to stay stamp to your new passport and do the departure stamp in it.

Ok my mistake so I just check the passports in and they will transfer the stamp not the visa.

Any ideas on second part of the first question.

As in do I go to the mall where the new location is or do I go to the old location by the airport to do this

Recent information because when I got my passport this morning from the consulate here in Chiang Mai they gave me a piece of paper asking immigration to switch the stamps over. Which I was told I had to do immigration locally

The consulate does that letter for everybody not knowing immigration's rules. If you had a long term extension from immigration you would have to get the stamps transferred.

CM immigration has turned people away that only had an entry and told them to do it when they leave the country.

A standard letter they hand out with new passports because some people will need to transfer long term extension stamps at immigrations.

I doubt anyone at the embassy even bothered to check your current status re: Thai immigrations in the old passport. Not really a concern of theirs. So everyone gets the letter and it's up to you to know whether or not you need to use it for something.

Just paid 3,900 THB for a new US passport at the US Consulate in Chiang Mai. The letter was included as others report here. I timed the new passport so that my visa expires (I am on my last valid entry) so there are no complications when exiting the country in a few months. Will bring old and new passports and letter at the time of exit (flight or land border, not decided yet). Thanks for all the clear information in this thread. Just thought I would verify this as of Feb 2017.

If you you are on an entry from a visa issued by an embassy or consulate there is no need to do anything until you leave the country. Just show both passports when you leave the country.
