Am I right in thinking you have 3 months to enter Thailand from the date your visa is issued?

I'm heading back in April, but would like to get it out of the way now in case I decide to come sooner.

A visa has an "enter before" date clearly marked and visible.

Entry to the Kingdom must be made on or before that date.

Single entry tourist visas are valid for three months from the date of issue

    As said tourist visas have a 3 month validity from the date of issue.

    The answer to your question is "yes". You can apply now for a single entry tourist visa for entry in April with the option to enter earlier.
