Visa for 6

Featured Replies

Hi,

I need to stay in Thailand for about a year or so with my wife and four kids. What's the best and cheapest way to handle the visa situation in Thailand?

We need some more info, like how old you or your wife is, where are you from etc etc

Edit: and what is the reason that you NEED to stay in Thailand ? Did you get a job in Thailand ? Workpermit ?

What is your and your wife's nationality and what do you intend doing in Thailand for a "year or so" ?

Superficially there is not a visa which would meet your stated requirement.

More detail of your circumstance may result in better advice.

If the children will be attending school they could get non immigrant ED visas and one year extensions of stay for attending school. Since you have more than one child you and your wife could get extensions as their parents. You and your wife would each have to have 500k baht in a Thai bank for 30 days for the first extension.

If not then tourist visas would be your only option.

Nationality? Ages? Kids at school? Employment? etc

I'm Canadian. My wife and four kids are are Filipino. I live in the Philippines as an expat, but I'm sick and tired of the corruption and b.s. there. I need a place to stay in Asia until their paperwork is done for Canada.

I'm not expecting a year visa. I'm sure we'll be there in a tourist capacity and those don't extend more than three months. I'm just trying to figure out the cheapest and best way to do this with a family of six vs a single expat.

someone mentioned educational/student visa? Is it worth looking for an educational/student visa for adults in an english program (none of us speak Thai)? If such a program exist can we bring our kids on that visa?

You should check the costs associated with an Ed visa starting with the school fees.

It would not provide a low cost option.

edit

Reread your post. You would be very unlikely to be accepted for an Ed visa if you intend "studying" English unless you were to enroll on a University degree course.

Sick and tired of corruption and b.s. in Philippines ? Thailand is not that different.

I think easier for you would be Cambodia, you can get a Year (Business) visa for approx 280 USD.

Sorry I meant program in English and not an English major. In the Philippines, most courses were in Tagalog, so it was hard to find a program an English speaker can enroll in.

I know Thailand has corruption too, but I'm ending up spending thousands to government officials to avoid frivolous complaints. I'm hoping I wouldn't be as much of a target in Thailand.

I heard Cambodia has an easier visa program, but I also heard it is waaaaaaaaay more expensive than either Philippines or Thailand in housing and food.

As said if you want to study English an Ed visa would probably not be available. If you wish to study Thai then OK ---- I am sure the teachers will speak some English to facilitate learning but this is not a cheap option.

I you want to live comfortably in Thailand with 6 persons then rent will also not be cheap. I lived in Cambodia for approx a year and a half and I spend way less there then in Thailand. However we were only 2 persons and eat local food.

Good luck with whatever you decide.
