as an ex-pat doing visa runs on 30 day visa exemptions and not yet due for a tourist visa.

what if a person were denied entry, for whatever reason, to another country during a visa run. could they get back into thailand? would they get a new 30 day visa exemption?

i know that they do check to see that there is an exit stamp from the other country when they put the thailand entry stamp in the passport, but what if there weren't one and you couldn't get one?

This is the quote on Immigration web site for Cambodia crossing if you have overstay stamp. Believe in other cases you would normally receive a 7 day entry to allow pack up and flight out.

Overstayers can pay overstay fine at Aran immigration checkpoint.

- Note: If you have paid the overstay fine and are stamped out of Thailand, the Cambodian Immigration could reject entry and send you back to Thailand without stamping you in and out of Cambodia. In this case the Thai Immigration will have to send you to Immigration Bureau in Bangkok for investigation/interrogation/deportation.

- Cambodian Immigration could reject entry for different reasons. This is nothing to do with Thai Immigration.

Some good reasons?

They're short on cash.

just ran across this on lonely planet:

Hate to be the bearer of bad news here, folks, and wish I could call myself a recent Tachileik exiter, but the rules have indeed changed. I spent two days in Tachileik in the first week of October, trying to cross the border -- unsuccessfully. Apparently the rules changed on October 1st, when the "chief" of immigration decided to no longer allow travellers to exit through Tachileik if they hadn't entered there. While it was apparently always officially the law that you had to exit the country where and by the same means you entered, the rule hadn't been enforced until now. (This info was verified in a German guidebook -- wish LP had made it clearer in theirs!)

There was no mention at all of a $30 fee, by any of the umpteen people we spoke with. We tried every negotiating tactic in the book, including substantial tea money and offering to buy a whole new visa, to no avail. The message was that we had to go back to Yangon and fly out from there. If we didn't have the cash to do so, we were to call our embassy. We even tried crossing the border and trying to convince Thai immigration to let us in without a stamp. The Thai side was completely unaware of the rule change and even went back to the Myanmar immigration office with us to help us get an exit stamp, but that too ultimately failed. The Thai side was sympathetic, but would not admit us without an exit stamp.

So at the end of the day, we lost several travel days and spent $160+ each on flights back to Yangon and then BKK, plus a few nights lodging. Not to mention that Tachileik is a pretty miserable place to be stuck, for any amount of time.

Hopefully this is just a temporary clamp down, but for now I would definitely NOT attempt a border crossing through Tachileik!
